men's thrifting
« on: January 19, 2013, 04:54:02 PM »
so, i've been on a tear looking for men's clothes at thrift stores and, at least in my corner of california, it seems to be lacking.

and when i say lacking... i mean i am SORELY DISAPPOINTED in what i'm seeing on the racks. i can find men's ties and crummy (p)leather jackets and, but i can't seem to find anything decent. it's as though men only wear "gap" sweatshirts and lousy shoes. I used to be able to find nice vintage menswear without any problem. now i think someone is getting there before me and buying up stuff to go to the high-end vintage stores. Maybe someone is shipping it all to LA and NY, knowing that men there will buy "vintage"?

anybody have the same experience? i was in one store the other day and they had to search just to FIND their menswear rack! ONE TINY rack. how disappointing!

Vintage menswear does sell well online and in boutiques so I am sure you do have more competition these days.  Maybe try church rummage sales or estate sales if they have them in your area?  I would even try to put a post on Freecycle for older menswear, explaining you like to wear it and have a difficult time finding it (so people don't just think you are going to sell it).  Maybe someone with a closet full of some relatives clothing will be happy to unload it on you.

This reminds me of a story my cousin and her husband were telling me about a cab ride they took to the airport in Chicago.  The cab driver shows up in a really cool vintage suit & accessories.  They ask where he finds his clothing and he says thrifts stores, he finds lots of it.  If you ever in Chicago definitely go thrifting there!

I've found that the thrifts with the most mens clothing are found in non-chain thrifts near predominately gay neighborhoods or near low-rent neighborhoods.

Don't ask me why.. I've found some really nice stuff in both areas.

I saw the "glasses basket" in the back room of the Sally last night.  The manager there saves up all eyewear that comes in for a long time until it fills up a basket and then puts them all out for 99 cents (used to be 49 cents).  Went back today it was out.  I used to find some great vintage glasses but not lately.  Still I usually get a few pairs of designer ones.  Today just one, these mens Ray Ban sunglasses:

Excellent condition, headed for Ebay.
