My daughter told me that it's plastic with a #7 on the bottom that is not safe (especially when heated)...
well there ya' go.. i knew i'd heard something somewhere.. thanks. i'll check my plates.

I believe #3 and #6 are dangerous too, especially when heated or frozen.

I am an Alf nut. Yes, Melmac exists.

The pet food panic was because of melamine in the food. Melamine is what the dishes are made of. I have some new melamine/melmac dishes and they say right on them that they are not microwave safe.

Anyone seen my cat? She seems to be missing.

Googled this "BPA" and wikipedia has a ton of info on this....a lot of it is overhead reading - but it is totally worth checking out the whole article...come to find out the white plastic coating in canned foods and drinks/formulas is made with this stuff too!  They are basicly saying that we know it's not good for you...but we don't know what levels...so we're gonna keep using it in everything except baby bottles till more studies are done!  Comparing it to when they did studies on the chemicals in cigarettes and it took years for them to admit the truth...Great read!!!

Identification in plastics

Some type 7 plastics may leach bisphenol A
Some type 3 plastics may leach bisphenol A

There are seven classes of plastics used in packaging applications. Type 7 is the catch-all "other" class, and some type 7 plastics, such as polycarbonate (sometimes identified with the letters "PC" near the recycling symbol) and epoxy resins, are made from bisphenol A monomer.[4] When such plastics are exposed to hot liquids, bisphenol A leaches out 55 times faster than it does under normal conditions, at up to 32 ng/hour.[73] Type 3 (PVC) can also contain bisphenol A as antioxidant in plasticizers.[4] Types 1 (PET), 2 (HDPE), 4 (LDPE), 5 (polypropylene), and 6 (polystyrene) do not use bisphenol A during polymerization or package forming,[74] and thus will not leach bisphenol A into food or beverages.

Whoa, thank you for researching & posting that. "Food" for thought, definitely. Something to think about as we use older food containers, etc.

I haven't been able to check my melmac and melamine dishes yet...but I feel sure they aren't affected by this...I would have no problem eatting on them...and even the newer plastic character type plates are OK if I'm not mistaken (my daughter checked theirs and hers was OK)...just some of the sippy cups and bottles...she did tell me I should check my storage containers and just not heat stuff in the microwave in plastic...since heating plastic tends to "loosen and/or melt"....who knows...heck they say just standing by a microwave can hurt you - or opening the door too quickly lets the rays escape!!!  Is anything really safe anymore - LOL !!!

All we really know is #7 and #3 items can release this stuff....so till we know more just err on the side of caution!!!

Maybe we should all post a pic of our favorite melmac pattern!  I do love the splatter patterns/colors...I have bowls like that and have seen the trays in splatter too...do they make the plates/bowls/cups in the splatter pattern?
