A Study in Contrasts; or, They Want WHAT?!
« on: September 12, 2014, 10:07:37 PM »
Interesting day at Aunt Sally's that goes to prove that people in back have no clue sometimes.

Exhibit A: A nice Sansui 4000 receiver from the '70s. A little dusty, but nothing too crazy. Price: $35.99. Next to it: a pair of Sansui SP-1000 speakers. A little rough around the edges but probably serviceable. Price: $9.99. For the pair. Very nice system for someone. I felt heartbroken to leave it there.

Exhibit B: early '60s Magnavox stereo console. Phonograph only (no tuner or tape deck), nice contemporary cabinet. Price: $200! Oh...and apparently it was gutted. I saw no speakers, no amp, no nothin' when I peeked through the holes in back. But the record player was still there inside. I feel heartbroken for anyone who buys this for what it was made for if it truly was ripped apart.

So there you have today's study in contrasts.

Those consoles are going for stupid money at this point.  Some of them are cool looking, but they have to go with your decor, otherwise, what's the point?

Surprised you didn't score the Sansui stuff.

I saw a nice Grundig console 6 or 8 months ago.  They wanted $300 IIRC.  If it was $50-$60, it would be in my home right now.  There's a small church thrift in Chantilly, they had a REALLY nice low profile console, but it was the cabinet only, nothing was inside.  They wanted $15. Susan & I looked it over for about 30 minutes, but just couldn't think how we could repurpose it, so we left it.  If there was a little more room in there it would have made a super cool bar.

Guy gotta know his limits. And as far as space goes, I've hit mine. I have too much stuff to flip or otherwise try to get rid of already.

Also, I'm pretty satisifed with the Pioneer stuff I've been using. Like they said in the old Tareyton cigarette commercials, "I'd rather fight than switch."
