Springfield IL Thrift Stores
« on: April 19, 2006, 11:33:55 AM »
My daughter & I visited several thrift stores in Springfield IL on 4/17/06.  First stop was Sojourn's Westside Fashions Upscale Resale.  I was happy to find a hardcover book that I've been looking for and it was less than $3.00.  We looked at the clothing and I thought the prices though were high for a thrift store.  My daughter did find a few items of clothing to buy.

Next we visited the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Wabash.  We found many items there to purchase too.  We wanted to visit the Goodwill store on Wabash but it had been damaged during a recent tornado and won't reopen until the 21st, bummer.

Next we visited Plato's Closet which is a resale shop for teens.  I found the prices to be very high.  They did have some clearance items that were reasonably priced.  I bought one item there and my daughter bought 2 T-shirts for her daughters.  Upon returning home she did find a hole right in front of one of the shirts and it was priced at $8.00!!!  I didn't care for the store at all.  I love hunting for bargains and there weren't any there.  I can go to SA or Goodwill and find the same tees priced at least $5.00 less than at this store.

We visited the Salvation Army store on 11th street and we found many many bargains there.  We spent a couple of hours there and spent over $100 and it was well worth it.  Lots and lots of bargains to be found there.  I looked at the dishes and thought that many of them were overpriced.  There were several that I would have bought to sell on ebay but they were too high.  I find that most Salvation Army thrift stores are overpriced for dishes and some other items, clothing is usually a good bargain there.  These stores tend to use books for their pricing and items will be priced according to collectable prices, even broken chipped pieces will be priced like it is in mint condition.  Though you can find a few items there that are reasonably priced that you can resale.  That's the fun of the hunt is finding that hidden treasure.

We had planned on visiting other thrift stores in Springfield but we ran out of time.  So there are great bargains to be found in Springfield and it's fun to find them.

AWWWWW!!!!!!!!! Do you know how happy I was to see this post?! I am from Springfield and you are talking about the favorite highschool hangouts of me and my friends! *Sniff* I was heatbroken to see the photos of the tornado damage outside of Goodwill, where my favorite Springfield icon, the pink elephant, used to sit. A picture in the State Journal-Register showed it tattered and overturned, stripped of his sunglasses and martini glass. I have many pictures from me and my friends' Goodwill adventures in front of the pink elephant. That Goodwill is in Jerome, the neighborhood where my mom grew up, where my grandparents lived, where I went to church, where my aunt and uncle live and work now, and where I spent many days swimming at the family friend's pool, right behind the Goodwill. MEMORIES! And you're right, Salvy is the greatest! Like I said, I was ecstatic to read this post. It's so crazy how romanticized your hometown can get when your away so long. But, I am going back in a couple weeks and thrifting is definitely on my agenda!

P.S. Not to ecstatic to read about Plato's Coset. My step-sister brought that store to Springfield and still owns it, as far as I know. Sorry about the bad experience. [/img]

We went to visit your favorite thrift store, the Goodwill store on Wabash on 4/22.  It was great! Lots and lots of bargains to be found.  The only thing I didn't like was the clothing wasn't sorted by sizes.  I spent a lot of time looking for the sizes in items, especially mens pants.  I had to open the pants to look for the label inside to find the sizes.  Wasted too much time doing that.  I really love when the stores sort it by sizes.

Plato's Closet refunded my daughters money with no hassle.  I just don't like resale  or consignment shops.  I'd rather find the item at a thrift store, the prices are much lower.

Springfield is recovering rapidly from the tornado that hit there.  But the elephant is gone, I never got to see it and pictures aren't the same!  I wish I'd gone there before it was gone to see it.
