Valentines Day project
« on: January 16, 2008, 12:15:39 AM »
I was going to make a Valentine's Day door hanger but made this little impromptu project instead.  They are little stuffed hearts made from an old thrifted wool crazy quilt (it had lots of moth holes so it was OK to cut up).  Even the buttons, ribbon & stuffing was thrifted so it is a 100% thrift project.  I tried putting them in several places, but they ended up on top of this antique book of poetry- very fitting!

As usual I can't figure out how to post the pics, nothing happens when I click Post.  Here are the http links:

Those look very nice.  Great creative idea reusing that quilt.
Today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

Oh, those are sweet-- I like the little embellishments like the pearl buttons-- really adds that extra vintage touch.

I love the romantic, homemade goodness of it all...it looks like a Victorian piece. How romantic! Did you stuff them lavender, so they a scent?

How cool -- what did you use for the stuffing?  I am always wanting to find affordable stuffing.

Thriftily,

I have some lavender buds & essential oil but I did not use them for this project.  I want to make some sachets with slit openings in the back so when the lavender scent fades the stuffing can be replaced.  I have been using the little pink candle in the background though & am really liking it.  It is Yankee Candle pink grapefruit (that I got at the SA of course).  The big Yankee Candle flagship store is just down the road from here so there are always Yankee Candle castoffs at the thrifts.  I pick up the cheap ones to have on hand as gifts.  This one is fruity & a little floral- not too overpowering.

I got a big bag of Mountain Mist "Star fluff" at the SA quite awhile ago which I have finally opened for this project.  It is polyester but has a nice downlike feel.  It is made in the US & there is an address of Depew, NY on the bag- maybe they have a factory outlet in NY?  Joanne's has some 50% off coupons for any regular price purchase on their website too.  One trick about joanne's coupons- If an item is on sale, say 25% off, you can still ask them to take the coupon, they won't take an extra 50% off but they will discount the item 50% rather than the 25%.

That is a brilliant idea!  They are so beautiful and flower-like, I just naturally assumed they would be scented in some way, they look that good :) :)

those are so pretty! Really an old "homey" country feel! What a great idea to use an old wool quilt! Have you ever thought about making them from velvet material? One time I picked up at the goodwill a large piece of pink velvet (my favourite color) thinking that I would make heart satchets, well least to say I never did do it and I dont even know what I did with the velvet fabric, for all I know I might still have it stashed away somewhere, the velvet was real lovely and not a hard velvet but real soft, oh well my intentions were good, anyhow, good job! thanx for sharing! :p.s. makes me want to go and "hunt" for that velvet now in my junk! lol!

I have an old pair of velvet pants that don't fit so I was planning on cutting them up at some point too.  This is an idea that I saw in a book called Victorian Embroidery that I got at a library sale.  These little pin cushions are made with pink velvet & require little sewing, you use pins & beads to secure the design:

I have been inspired to do more crafting from reading various blogs & this site too- hopefully we can all continue to inspire one another! :D

Thanx vts! for the link! will keep that in mind if I ever find that fabric, my pink velvet was a bright pink, almost like a fuschia, I hope I still have it, I thought about beading the little hearts I cut out and then stuffing them and sewing them, I thought that they would make nice little gifts for all the girls in my family, something to put in their drawers to keep them smelling nice, I also thought about stuffing them with lavender buds etc..thanx again for rehashing that idea for me! ;)
