Upcycled Breadbox

I bought this breadbox at Goodwill for $3.50 and fixed it up with a little paint and images from old cookbooks.  The little coffee pot magnet was in one of the drawers when I bought it so I had to keep it and use it one the finished product.

That's awesome!  Nice job!  What a coincidence, I picked up an old metal breadbox for a freecycler a few weeks ago.  It was a little beat up so I though if I would keep it I would paint it & use one of my vintage Meyecord kitchen decals on it.  It is sitting on the kitchen floor & I keep tripping over it so I have been thinking about leaving it in a free box on the sidewalk, but maybe I am inspired now!

oh, by the way is there any trick to painting a metal breadbox?  I have spraypaint including primer.  Did you do anything to prepare it for painting?

I sanded it really well, but that was it.  I did use a paint that is specifically for metal.  Spray paint is the best!

Yeah, I got a bunch of spray paint from a freecycler too, some rustoleum, which is for metal.  I spray painted a picture frame the other day, it came out good.  The paint is a little fumey though, and I used it outside too.  Probably not too good for the environment, I think I will wear a mask next time is use it.

I rarely get breadboxes like that, but when I do I usually get $75 in good condition.

I have seen chrome versions of this go for pretty good money on eBay.  Alas, this one was in pretty crappy shape on the exterior.  It also had that horrible gilded gold look which is not so popular.  Lucky for me, the interior was spotless.  I think it's hard to find old breadboxes in good condition.

I love it! Last week at my local SA there was this EXACT shape bread box in chrome and 1950s turquoise robins egg blue. It also had all of the matching canisters...(sugar, flour, ect...) The big bread box itself was I think exactly what you paid...$3 something. Each extra canister was like 45 cents. There is no room in my kitchen for a set that big, and it would be too bulky for me to sell on ebay so I left it. It was an awesome 50s set tho, and in good condition. No big surprise it was gone the next day I went to SA. Love vintage kitchen!
