Gimme Shelter! (photo heavy)
« on: July 12, 2008, 12:21:26 PM »
I recently came to the conclusion that I needed shade in my practically treeless backyard.  I just happened to have an older wooden swing set that needed to be taken down and, since I like to recycle things, I re-purposed the swing set into a shade giving shelter.

The donor swing set:

After setting the posts and adding part of the roof supports:

Trusses to support the roof:

I slathered on some stain and screwed down the PVC roof panels.  I bought the stain and the roof panels at the Habitat For Humanity Re-Use Center.  It's a great place the thrift for building supplies.

The finished shelter.  12'x6' of blissful poolside shade!

Thanks for looking =)

Way cool Sproket! My husband who is a carpentar just recently built a barn/shelter similar to that but with walls and way bigger to house all his "man " equipment, ie tractor and saws , you know "man" things! Of which I have noooo interest! lol! You done a good job, maybe you can turn that into some kind of Ticki bar or something, with a few sides, then stools etc, of course using all thrifted items! ;)

Pretty cool!  You could hang those rattan shades that I see people use on covered porches on the sides - that would definitely give it a tiki bar look!

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!  I think I will look for some type of roll up shade for the back of it...I like the tiki bar idea too!  You're all invited over for drinks anytime...I even have the little umbrellas!  ;-)

Purrrrrrrrrfect!  The mermaids are exactly what I'm missing and you can't have an afternoon pool party without them!

My friends and I usually throw at least one Tiki party a year.  To get everyone in the mood we put on the invitations that there will be a special prize for the person who comes in the tackiest Hawaiian shirt.  Its usually something we thrifted for a couple of bucks.  We've picked up Tiki torches, paper lanterns, tacky light sets, etc either on deep clearance, or thrifted.  Of course we save everything for next year, so the only real expense is the food.
