1950's Dining Table Lamp Project.
« on: May 01, 2014, 04:20:25 PM »
Earlier this week I picked up a very old, and very tired 1950's ceiling hugger type light fixture in a thrift for $5.  Even though it was very ugly and in very poor condition I had a vision.  It went home with me.  I purchased a swag kit for $15, and a new socket for $5.  A can of white appliance spray paint, and a tap set from Harbor Freight.  Total cost about $30.

First, I masked off all the wood, and resprayed all the white metal with epoxy spray paint.  I let it dry overnight.  I cleaned and polished the wood.  I then installed the new socket assembly, and used a canopy piece from an old chandelier in the garage to make the brass trim piece on top.  (That's what the tap was for, to make a bushing so that would screw on).  Added the swag kit, and lightbulbs, and Voila! It matches our vintage dining room set in both style and color of wood.

I was in the same thrift today, and found another vintage fixture to refurbish and repurpose for our house!  Pictures to follow soon.  I also saw the same lady that sold me this first light, and showed her pictures of the completed lamp.  She was very impressed.

Saw these guys on Etsy that turn just about anything into hanging lamps, including Tupperware jello molds and Pyrex casserole dishes & mixing bowls.  I like the jello mold lamps:

I just noticed that the images were broken in the original post, so I fixed it.
