Southbury Training School is practically a destination thrift store. With three separate buildings, you can find a great variety of things you never know you needed. They get SOOOO many donations that they're hard-pressed to keep up with the flow, but the clothing building is very well organized and kept very neat. The "collectibles and furniture" area is equally neat, although the prices are on the high side. The "junk room", containing books, housewares, seasonal stuff, luggage, games, and what-have-you, is a real treasure hunt. I've found a few pieces of uranium glass in amongst the dreck, and some vintage kitchenware as well. The little rooms to the left of the loading dock contain lots of small kitchen appliances and electronics and tools - always worth a look.
In the past I have donated hundreds of dollars of clothing to this charity since I grew up in the area and I have always used the after hours clothes bin box. Today, they were Extremely RUDE!!!!! I called ahead to find out where I drop off clothes and bedding since they have two different stores. I was told to go to the 1st one, where they sell clothes. If I go during hours, bring the clothes into the store. If I go after hours than drop the clothes off at the bin. I went while the store was open. I had a box full of clothes and a child's comforter. They saw that I was struggling, yet they did not offer to help me. I asked where should I leave my donations and they were beyond rude and said outside. They didn't even hold the door for me! I was beyond appalled, and kept my donations. My mother always raised me to respect my elders so I left. These women are older, probably in their late 60's or 70's. I really wonder how they stay in business besides the after hour drop off box. Thank you for making the rest of my day salty.
Treasures in the rough! There are actually three separate stores; the furniture and collectibles portion; the books/housewares/toys room, and the stand-alone clothing store. I love this place!
