I dislike most dolls.  I hate Madame Alexander and fancy-pants antique dolls.  I have my old Barbies (and I wish I had my Dawns and my Growing Hair Chrissy) but I never look at dolls at thrift stores or yard sales.  But...

Yesterday I went to a yard sale and the guy was pulling old doll heads out of a box and lining them up on a bookcase, and his wife started talking about them so I had to feign interest for a minute.  Then I saw HER.  Her left eye was stuck shut like she was winking at me.  I picked her up and her paint flaked off in my hand.  (Probably lead paint, too.)  How much, I asked.  Five bucks, the lady said.  Sold!

The lady loved the way I cradled her in my hands.  She kept saying she wanted the doll heads to go to good homes and she was so, so, SO very happy that I bought this one.  (The others were all ugly, fairly new things.)

When I got her home I was able to wiggle the mechanism inside her head and get her left eye to open.  She's composition (sawdust mixed with glue) so I'm guessing she's from 1910-1920 or so.  She's nearly 6" tall which means she came from a very large doll.

Gromit is fascinated by her.  Too fascinated, as in, "I'll chew her to bits if I get her alone!"  I have her on display on the mantle, where he can't reach her.

Doll heads are good display items, yours is still pretty, I think, despite her wear.  That is pretty good that you still have your Barbies.  My Mom got rid of our Barbies as soon as we stopped playing with them.  I think we destroyed them anyway.  I wish I had my old Bionic woman doll, she was my favorite.
