hello from Philly!

« on: January 13, 2010, 09:13:29 PM »

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in a long time, but I am a frequent lurker.  I love this forum!  I'm totally obsessed with thrifting for clothes and jewelry; I go at least 1-2x/week all over Philadelphia.

I want to start sharing some of my thrift finds with you guys, since I know you will understand the excitement!

Best recent finds:  real ugg boots in very dark green, short length $5; indigo-colored peacoat with $200 pricetag still on for $30 (ok, not the cheapest ever but still cool, and I HAD to have it);  Tumi over the shoulder women's work bag/briefcase $2 (zipper broken, fixed at leather store for $10!); lots of cool chunky vintage beaded costume jewlery for cheap.

I lost my camera charger but will post some pics when I find it!

Any other Philadelphians out there who want to share???  I feel like Philly has wonderful, unspoiled thrifting-lots of high end stuff, not too picked over.  Does anyone agree?

I have never been to Philly, but it sounds like my kind of thrift town!  I am actually looking for a peacoat too.  I have found so many cute scarves this winter I wanted to get a peacoat to wear with them!

I am also looking for an ugg style boot.  I got my daughter some ugg style boots at Old Navy for Christmas and they are comfy- congrats on finding the real ones!

Congrats also on the jewlery finds, I haven't seen a nice of piece of jewlery at a thrift for months.

I live down in Gettysburg, I would love to thrift Philly but the train ticket would probably be too expensive to do repeatly.  Maybe something I should plan for like thrifting by train to NY with stops along the way.  Smiley

Not from Phiily but South Jersey has some great stores. One of my favorites is Durand thrift located in Woodbury Nj. They sell their clothes for $1.00 regardless of brand name or even if new with tag. I have found some good stuff there for my girls.

I finally found a peacoat today half-price for 5 bucks, not a heavy vintage one but still nice, I might take the buttons off & replace them with vintage buttons.  I also got a Mary Quant vintage scarf for 3 bucks.  Never saw any Mary Quant stuff at the thrifts before.  She is a british designer I think her height of popularity was in the sixties, but she is till alive so I don't know if she still designs.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies!

sorry for being MIA.  I'm so excited to read about other Philly thrifters!
Valley thrift shopper, your finds sound great.  I'm in love with vintge scarves--good work!!!!   and isn't it great when you've been looking for something (ie your peacoat) for a long time and suddenly it's there???  thrifting nirvana!

sueinNJ-I am going to try the thrift store you suggested.  It sounds like paradise!

slpwendy, my husband does some work in the Lehigh valley and we have thrifted extensively there--Quakertown Salvo is the best by far!  We got our vintage 1950s stereo cabinet there for $50 just a few weeks after we started dating.  Now it's in our living room!

Lately, I've been thrifting more for designer clothes than anything else (I have a ton of vintage accessories and we are maxed out on space for vintage housewares).  My absolute favorite stores in Philly are:  Village Thrift in Pennsauken NJ right next to "The PUB" (I say that because it is not in the yellow pages or on the web in any  way), Super Thrift in the Aramingo shopping center on Aramingo Ave in Port Richmond, and Circle Thift (I live around the corner from the south Philly location and love it, but the Frankford Ave location is also awesome).  Other places I go:  American Thrift at 8th and Wolfe (rarely find stuff but when I do it's fantastic, and it is near my house), Buffalo exchange (not a thrift store but I trade my clothes here all the time), Salvation Army at 22nd and Market, Philly AIDS thrift at 7th and Bainbridge (really great store and great cause).  There are lots of other good thrift stores in the burbs but I haven't been in awhile b/c these have been keeping me very, very busy!

Recent finds (where do I start??):  Village Thrift:  Kenneth cole long black winter coat with hood and fake fur trim, Ann Taylor dark wash jeans that fit perfectly, super cute red rain boots, vintage costume jewlery (not my best stuff, but decent fake pearls).  Circle Thrift So Philly:  adorable Gap summer dress, anthropologie skirt  SO AWESOME.  I haven't been to super thrift in a few weeks and I'm going thru withdrawal!!

Who else is in the philly area, or has fun thift finds to share??

I am super jealous of the stereo cabinet, I'd love to see a picture of it.  I wanted a vintage stereo cabinet for my vintage stereo, haven't found one yet, I got a vintage lane two tiered table that works for now.

I have the opposite problems with the clothes, have too many clothes, also i am always seeing cute clothes so I don't look at them everytime I go thrifting.  Awesome housewares or collectibles are harder to find so i go for those.  I am eyeing a faux fur trimmed coat myself, though, waiting to see if it lasts to 1/2 price day.

we finally found our camera charger, so i'll post the stereo cabinet pic when i come home in a few days (i'm out of town at a conference). maybe i'll take a picture of my ugg boots too!

i never have the patience to wait until 1/2 price day.  good for you for having restraint!

I didn't see my coat today, maybe someone bought it, sometime stuff reappears so you ever know.  I did get a cute big yellow enamel flower pin and a vintage tole tray, haven't found one of those for a while.  They had this set of three Pyrex bowls   http://cgi.ebay.com/Set-of-3-Pyrex-nested-blue-glass-mixing-bowls_W0QQitemZ370333323924QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5639961294

They were marked seperately but would have totaled $4.00.  I am not in the market for anymore mixing bowls unless they are the patterns I am looking for, so i passed, but I never saw those ones before.
