I guess that is why.  Yesterday DD and I hit our favorite thrift.  Every Thursday whatever color had been in the shop longest changes to 50% off.
This week end it was yellow.
I found:
A pair of actual  women's leather gloves for $1, marked $2 originally.  I had to fiddle around a little to look at the tag thinking they were a nice synthetic.  When I realized they were real leather, into the cart they went.  Guess no one else took the time to pull the tag out and look.
A navy blue 100% wool commando sweater.  DS loves those and has them in other colors, but not blue.  I paid over $80 for the one I bought him for Christmas two years ago.  This one still had the tag atached but it was buried under the color tags stapled to it.  My cost $4.  A lot better than the $80 I paid at the store.  A plus, DD had to research it as soon as we got home.  Turns out the unofficial nickname of the garment in England is a woolie pullie.  I thought that incredibly cute.  DS, who knows what all the patches and straps and thingies are for, was of course horrified.
DD and I were in the mens section looking at shirts when I spied a really pretty shirt, a sort of purplish swirl print.  I picked it up and realized it was 100% silk,  and marked $1.50 so $.75  We looked a little further adn found four more all in the $1 to $2 range.  Dd bought them all, to either wear as is or re-construct into something else.  We figured someone died, and their clothes donated, or someone moved from a much warmer clime or maybe  someone got married and new wife said no way to the silk shirts.  However, good for us.  Don't know why any of them were still in the store after two weeks but a good day for us.

Well Done.

Because no one but me ever seems willing to lift up the insoles on shoes that have them, I've been able to score some FANTASTIC vintage and designer shoes.

Think 1940's platforms, Gucci, etc. etc. etc.

Sure, it might be a little gross, but it has paid off handsomely!!

Fleaqueen,  I always like to expand my knowledge base of what to look for. Could you go into more detail on the "etc. etc. etc." - what types of shoes these are and how much they sell for i.e. what does "paid off handsomely" mean. Any links would be appreciated. Thanks.

What types of shoes: all kinds, but mainly dress shoes.

My definition of 'pay off handsomely:' well, one pair of 1940's platforms I bought for about $4 and sold for over $80.
Two pairs of mens Gucci shoes I bought for $15 (the store was having a buy-one, get-one on shoes) went for about $180.

And then there were the two pairs of shoes I got at auction for $50, which dated to 1815 or so, one pair of which were MINT.  The payday for those two was just under a thousand dollars.

Note that the ones I make the big bucks on are always in very good or better condition, or are at least fixable.  .

I NEVER buy anything made in China, no matter how good it looks.

Keep your eyes open for non-Made in China shoes in very good or better condition that are priced reasonably.  My threshold is $5 or less, unless they're really special.

Alas, I have no links, but looking at what vintage shoes sell for on eBay would be a good education.

Hmmm, not bad not bad...

Thanks for the reply.  I have sold a couple Salvatore Ferragamo shoes and those went nicely. I did notice that the demand is significantly higher when there is some type of brand signature on the outside. I've seen that trend elseware aside from shoes. People like to show off.

I'll check eBay.

By the way, how do I find out about auctions in my area?

To find auctions in your area go to www.auctionzip.com, and enter your zip code.

BTW, where are you located?

Telescope eyepieces.  I often find myself buying fixer upper telescopes and one thing I've learned is to search the area all around any telescope.  A lot of kids play with them and you'll often find eyepieces, finder scopes, and other accessories scattered around under and around a thrift store telescope.  Wink

I bought a cheapo telescope from a thrift for a few dollars. You can see the moon well and planets, but I'd really like to find a good one.
Oh and a metal detector too.

I don't do much of the finding just regular stuff unless it is a super great item.

Man, I am FEENING for some good thrift finds.  I haven't been going to a lot of sales due to health reasons, but now I am ready!  I need to find some great things and fast.

At the Savers stores near me, they put a date on the tags representing when the items were priced.  It's fun to see how long some of the things have been there.  Usually clothes don't last more than 3 weeks, but some of the other "junk" could easily be there a month.  I wonder if that's because it's overpriced or if the right person just hasn't found it yet...
