I stopped by the Union Park Goodwill Friday night and saw this round gray ceramic bowl...it had a top on it...and of course they had it taped together with 3-4 strips of tape so you couldn't look inside.  So I untaped it and still couldn't figure it out.  I wrote down the info on the bottom and when I got home I proceeded to try to find out something...anything on it...the name "Raymor" came up but nothing that looked like this!  My persistence paid off...and I discovered it was a "Bun Warmer" - the lid sits on a knob on the top and covers the opening...you spin the cover around to get the buns out!  Needless to say I was very excited and went back on Saturday to claim it...hoping it would still be there...and it was!!!  I've posted pictures and hope you have a chance to check them out...this was a fun adventure!  I just love digging up info on things I've found (my M.O. is usually to get them first and check later..I'm impulsive like that)!  Sometimes it's a pleasant surprise...and sometimes not...but always a learning experience!!

What kind of things have you found...that ended up being something completely different than you initially guessed it was???

Are you speaking of the Union Park Goodwill off of Michigan?
If so we used to shop there often..

I too like to pick up an object and try to figure out what it is. Mostly I do, mostly. Then I walk over to Cookie and ask her what she thinks it is.
I also purchase alot of those items. We have a kitchen gadget for everything...

Hey Good Buddy,

I know the Goodwill on Michigan very well, I usually stop by there at least once a week on my way home from work...I first stop by the Community Thrift on Orange and then hit the Gwill on Michigan...the other days I literally have to force myselft to take another route home otherwise I "have" to stop!!!  The Union Park location is on East Colonial Drive, just east of Dean Road, by Murdock...I try to hit it at least once a week too!

Vintage kitchen - from dishes to appliances - is "one" of my weaknesses too!

Did you and Cookie get a chance to go to the estate sale in Vero Beach (the one with all the vintage electronics?)...I go to estate sales a lot...but that one was just too far away for me!

Genuine Imitation,

I didn't send pics of the bun warmer to the modish site...because they have one already...in fact that is the site where I found out what it was...I found it under the Steubenville Pottery section - page 3...I must say that it is a GREAT website though!  Both for just looking and checking out some of the vintage stuff and for info purposes!  They have a picture of the solid white one - it's gorgeous!

great find!  You have more will power than me.  I would have bought it first, then found out what it was.  My experience had been that the item usually isn't there when I go back for it.  So if I reall like it, it comes home to live with me.

Jeannie - Thanks for the vote of confidence about my will power!!!  If my daughter were to read that i would have to pick her up off the floor  Grin  She knows I have none!!!  The only reason I decided to wait was because my cart was already full of stuff...and lately I haven't been just going once a week....it's like Monday, Wednesday, and yard sales on Saturday...I do thrift therapy...every week...I could probably open up my own thrift store!  I shop for me - family - friends - and even telling myself I'm getting it to "flip" it...heck if I go in and leave with nothing I notice my bottom lip starting to poke out...it's so sad!  Luckily I have plenty of thrift stores in my area and yard sales are off the chart...plus I go to estate sales too!  I appreciate the "smile" though...the only will power I have is when I leave work and get to the red light at Orange Avenue...if I go straight...I go home...if I turn left - it's 2 thrift stores and I don't make it home till 7-7:30!  I turn left - a lot!!

Even when the wallets empty I still have to look...I feel like I'm missing out!

How hard is it for everyone else to drive by and not stop?  Do you have certain days that are "stop and check" days...I like Mondays or Tuesdays - right after weekend donations....and Thursday/Friday - before the weekend rush hits...

Oh THAT Goodwill. We used to go out there often when there were 2 other thrifts right near them.. We got part of our Target entertainment center there.

And Tinna, no we missed the Estate Sale near us. I totally dropped the ball on that one. (Don't tell Cookie)

I have a loop of three thrifts and I am centrally located in that loop.  It only takes about an hour to swing around to all three so I go everyday (unless I'm sick or have appointments).  One of them closes early on Friday so I ususally miss out on that one on Fridays, but otherwise I don't miss an opportunity to find a treasure!

If I am in the area of my favorite thrift, I stop.  I have come to the conclusion there is some inverse proportion at work in the universe here.  If I have little money on me I will find lots of stuff.  If I have lots to spend (well at a thrift how much is a lot anyway?) not so much.  My favorite night is Thursday.  Stuff is out for the week-end but not too picked over.  Tuesday is't bad to shop, not so much new stuff out but it is the day that the 1/2 off color sticker changes so things I thought too much earlier is now 1/2 off.  Got some  good stuff that way.  Monday is $.50 day but I am never there early enough to get anything good.

I sold a vintage sewing basket full of goodies several months ago.  Some of the items included these little feedsack fabric circles:

I did not know what they were at the time, but I was browsing through the April edition of Country Living & saw this article:

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj292/thriftshopper/yoyo.jpg

Luckily the article contains instructions for making them so I can make some more.  Definitley a "Duh" moment!

When I saw the first picture...with the circles I was certain I knew what the second picture would be...but I was pleasantly surprised!  I hadn't ever thought of putting the disks "on" something as a decoration.

What I thought I was going to see was a "clown" doll...made from the circle disks...when I was a kid my mom cut circles out of her material scraps and then she took needle and thread and went around the circle and then pulled and tied the thread...thus the circle disk...she did up a bunch of them and would take various stuff (thread and yarn) and would thread the disks on and stack them up until she got he length she wanted for the leg (then start another) and she made bigger circle disks for the body part and would thread each leg up the center of the bigger disks...smaller ones for the arms...and then she filled a bigger circle with stuffing when she pulled it together to make the face...you could decorate with hair, stitch or draw a face...the sky's the limit (use same colored material or all different kinds)...she made us dolls!

For country chic on a christmas tree...make tiny circles out of red/white gingham and thread in a long string (like popcorn) for garland!

Too cute...that was a great memory to remember!  Thanks...

Good old YoYo's- you'd be surprised what quilters/sewers/crafters can make with them. I've made a few projects, nothing major, but I've seen entire bedspreads made of yoyo's. I've also seen some pretty cool looking vest & jackets made  entirely of yoyo's. If you do a search of fabric + yoyo, you'll get a lot of links for instructions & various products.  Here is a great tutorial on making YoYo Clowns or Friends: http://sunshinescreations.vintagethreads.com/2006/10/how-to-make-yo-yo-friend.html, with some great pictures of various YoYo Friends.
