Doesn't that sound like the name of a deeply introspective Italian novel? Cheesy  But seriously, my thriftee buds...

Has anyone else here been "binning"? There's a GW bin store about 30 miles from my home, and when we need to be in that neck o' the woods, me and the mate pop in.

For those who have yet to bin, the GW bins is a store where stuff from the the regulars stores is dumped if nobody buys it.  The clothes sell for $1 a pound, and handbags are .50 to a buck, and the household items are sold by weight.

You just get in there and DIG! And remember your manners Smiley I've met a lot of interesting people in there.

Every time we've been, the place has been a mob scene. It's dusty and crowded and makes me sneeze. It's cold. But still, like a sailor being called to by sirens on a rocky reef, I must return. Why? Because it's the thrill of the hunt! As Big Daddy himself signs off:  "You never know what you are going to find next". And so it goes. I don't. But here's one item I found that rocked me:

I found a next-to-new Francisco Biasia purse. Inside was the sales receipt from Saks Fifth Avenue, which stated "Francisco Biasia", the item number, and the price: $450. My price was $1. The bag was lovely. It was purchased in 2004 (according to the receipt.)

I guess whoever bought it originally used it a few times and put it away. How it wound up in the bins I'll never know. It wasn't my style, so I cleaned it up a bit and sent it to my aunt, a genteel Southern lady who lives simply and elegantly on a small fixed income. She loves
it. She also knows where I got it and thinks it's a hoot!

Some of my other great bin finds over my absence from your bright presence:

1.Dolce y Gabbana jeans that fit me perfectly, $1

2. Fabulous handmade Leather handbag, drawstring, made in Morocco, .50. I get compliments on it whenver I carry it. It is definitely distinctive. It has that 60s bohemian flair.

3. A Johnson Bros. England china plate for Marshall Fields (now defunct) of "Chicago" for .34 Minty condition. Me mate found this one.

5. A wonderfully soft "Jacob's Pillow" tee-shirt,LS, .25 It has two very teeny holes in it, which I plan to embroider-over with little yellow suns. For now, I still wear it. It's got a great vibe, and I have no problem claiming credit for the holes Grin

6. Two simply wonderful over-sized flannet shirts (one of which I am wearing right now), .50 apiece. One is by "Guess"  Again, that 60s bohemian flair thing.

7. A "Loop New York" Andy Warhol "Knieves" totebag for .35. It was at the bottom of one bin and looked like it had been through a war. I took it home, laundered it, and it looks very gently used now...almost newly purchased and used a little.  Apparently these are sold at the MOMA? I love AW, and this piece is a cheerful shade of blue. But I never would have paid full price for it or gotten it even on sale, 'cause the workmanship on it is lousy. But for .35, it is great.

8. Justin cowboy boots. I think these were .75 At 6.5, they are a little big for me, but maybe I will try thicker socks. Oceangurl, what size are you? These took work to clean, but they are so funky.

So, thriftee buds, any bin experiences you want to share?

See you,
SeSo

Sounds like fun.  GW's only exist in the larger cities here in MA, so I have never even been to a regular GW!

I once passed over a Biasia bag at the Salvy because I was not familiar with the brand.  When I went home & looked it up I realized my mistake & went back but it was gone.

We have the Goodwill Clearance Center down off of 16th Street, south of I-10.  At least it used to be there.  I went there once.  Never again.  I think it had a dirt floor, and no parking.  The stuff that they had in there literally looked like it was the stuff they couldn't sell to the rag man to move overseas.  No amount of washing would have gotten rid of the fecal smell and the ground-in dirt from a hundred trips to the coal mines.  This place was B-A-D.  I wouldn't use the stuff in there to clean up blood and body parts at a traffic fatality.

The funny thing was - it was packed with people looking for the non-existent (at this place, anyway) killer buys.  Go figure.

See (-So, good to hear from) you next time

Seso, never been to a "bin" store, but would LOVE to go to one! Be still my thrifty heart! My little Italian heart be still! If the boots are to big for you , you must have teeny tiny feet! Iam only 4 feet ll inches tall and I wear a 6 and a half shoe! lol! Iam interested in those boots girlfriend! Sounds like a dream come true, Iam sooooo jealous over your Italian Biasia purse, Iam always wanting to find anything Lord and Taylor's, Sak's 5th Avenue, Gucci and lets not forget Chanel and Pucci! I even have a beautiful cat named "Little Ms. CoCo Chanel" after the famous namesake, and she is one of a kind designer Kitty! I have to email you about a funny story of me one time with the granddaughter of Saks 5th Avenue and what happened one evening, you will die! Thanks for thinking about me with the boot thingie, let me know, are you serious? Again be still my heart! Cheesy

Well, I thought I hit the jackpot when I got a next to new Francisco Biasa bag at the Monroeville Goodwill in PA but I had to pay $3.99.  Funny thing, I saw it online for around $500, and one day piece of hardware broke off on the purse.  I called francisco biasa and they sent me a pouch to mail the purse back to them for repair. They fixed the purse and reconditioned the leather and mailed it back to me, Free of Charge, including shipping both ways. I LOVE that purse!!  As far as bin goodwills, here in Western PA we used to have one near the universities but they closed it down years ago. I never ever found anything close to what you found there.  Yours sounds like a diamond in the ruff Cool

Ah, yes!  We have those here... I have been to two different ones recently.

At the first I found a vintage plastic pumpkin/black cat you put a light in the back of.  Total 65 cents.  Just right up my MIL's alley!

The second I found a nice bun of yarn, I'm thinking a wool blend, but oh, so soft!  It's varigated orange and purple.  It came all sealed up in a ziplock baggie with bamboo knitting needles and a knitted swatch, all for 45 cents.

After the last experience, I decided I didn't really enjoy the Goodwill Outlets enough to want to go again!  Both places were filthy (and the last was a newer store!)... the clientele were a bit scary, and digging through all the junk wasn't worth the finds.  At least in my experiences!  It sounds like you found some great items!

It was very interesting to me to see how vulture-ish the people shopping were!  I was there long enough for them to change out a couple of the aisles of bins... OH MY!  People lined up and grabbed up the new stuff to look at later.  I waited for the crowd to die down before I went to look, that's when I found the yarn.  I'm just not into having alot of competition when I am trying to find my treasures!  It takes away the relaxing factor!   Cheesy

Oh wow, what great finds. I haven't been so lucky with the GW's around here (they are very overpriced, imho). I've found great things, things I wanted/needed but nothing exceptional.

I'm with you OPJ. I just can't deal with having to muscle my way in and grab things.

I've been to a couple of them but never found anything as great as what you found SeSo.  Of course, I wouldn't know an expensive handbag if I saw one.

One of the stores is located in St. Pete on Gandy Blvd.  They have a regular thrift store up front and then the bin store in back of it with its own entrance.  I've been to the store in front several times but only to the bin store a few times.  I don't know why I don't visit it more often.  As you said it's the thrill of the hunt and you can discover some wonderful stuff if you look long enough.

Good to have you back.

Oceangurl, how are you sweetie? They are Justins and are genuine cowgirl boots made in the USA!!!!!!!  They are a "tan" or "camel" color.

Pics will have to wait a bit. I am in the middle of a lot of stuff. If I find an ebay link that has the same style, I will post it.

How are you doing?  Any neat thrifting lately?
