Scored a Top-of-the-Range Sony SLV-R1000 S-VHS player at a goodwill a while back for about $7.00.  Recently broke down and bought the compatible remote.  $13.95 postage paid off eBay.  So, for about $20, we have a great VCR for all our throw-back Christmas VHS tapes (of which we have a bunch).

Love watching tapes again.

Anybody else still use a VCR for Holiday viewing?

Yes, I still have a similar Sony S-VHS unit and 2 other VHSs. Use occasionally, as still have a lot of tapes; makes little sense to spend time/money to burn them to DVD (most originally dubbed from beta, anyway).

Ever run across 8mm home units?

I never see them, but would love to rip the a/v off my camcorder tapes. My camcorder just eats the tapes now.

I gave up on old VHS tapes in the late 80's.  My grandfather was a very early adopter of VHS.  When my grandmother moved in with us, I looked through her stuff.  Grandpa had recorded some cool stuff, like the last episode of M*A*S*H.  I decided to watch one of the tapes.  It was totally unwatchable.  Then later, we tried to use the VCR with a newer tape.  That didn't work either.  Turned out that the old tape really dirtied up the heads on the unit, and we had to pay $50 to have the whole thing cleaned out.  After that, I haven't put any old tapes in my machines.

I have a Go-Video combination 8MM & VHS deck which we use for watching the old Family videos.  The 8mm decks are pretty rare, but they pop up maybe once or twice a year in my rounds.

I just picked up at Goodwill in Surprise what appears to be a lower-to-mid-range Sony VCR with owners manual and remote for $4.99, in just-out-of-the-box condition.

It looks like some snowbird had it in the RV on the way down to Phoenix, it wasn't used, so they donated it.  Now it's my backup machine.

I saw an Audivox "Video in a Bag" system today at the Sally for 5 bucks.  Portable VHS and video game system player, precursor to the portable DVD player.  I was tempted to get it but I don't have that many VHS tapes anymore.
