Over the weekend, I'd had one of those great thrifting highs, having found a vintage lamp-- and the old timers here know, I am all about a good vintage lamp.

This one was great because it's sort of hideously-gaudy-beautiful-- meaning, of course, I had to have it. You can see it here:

Ah, thrifted gaudy lamps... so good for the soul! Smiley

A fantastic gaudy lamp, I must say!

But as I scrolled down your blog page, what did I spy? A Heinz recipe book?  With the most unnatural-looking hardboiled eggs on the cover?   Shocked

Oy Vey.

That lamp is perfectly God-awful.  I know we discussed "bordello" furniture in the past, so would you think this would qualify?

I'm not indicting your taste TSR, as I know that your aesthetic is quite refined and you apply it with laser-like precision.

However...

Has Miss Kitty shown any interest?

See you next time

You would get along perfectly with my neighbor that I do the antiques and collectables shows with.  Her house is done in the 60/70's style and everytime I buy something for her house I always go for the look I call "Its so tacky its cool".  The art is to get something not marginally tacky, but completely over the top falmboyantly tacky.  Not just one pioece will do either.

When constructing this look the person viewing the room must be overwhelmed with tackiness, with some sort of common theme or color to bring it all togeather.  Color is the easiest.  usually you can focus on avocado, rust orange, harvest gold, chocolate brown, etc.  Find something you like and run with it.  Add a few quirky accent pieces in a bright, basic color like bright red or yellow to add punch.

When done properly you can get a really high end designer retro look for next to nothing.  My friend gets many complements on her living room, and I think the most expensive piece was the sofa & armchair set bought for $120 at Goodwill.

Yep, it totally qualifies as a bordello lamp. And I'm not at all offended, BDA, I know it's totally mad. Smiley

Miss Kitty will just have to fight me for it!

Yup, Femme1, I did find a Heinz recipe book from the 50s. There is an overwhelming theme of Heinz Vinegar in that there book. And it ain't pretty!

PS- Jay, yup, I don't actually have a lot of truly gaudy pieces-- not like a whole room of it-- and most of my stuff is genuinely antiquey... but the occasional totally insane piece like this mixed in among the more sensible stuff does work, believe it or not.

And if I can find the right lampshade that bridges it between serious Victorian and seriously tacky, I will have done my job.

It made my day! Go ugly lamps!

This is going to be totally out there, but...

If you could find a lampshade frame, and then somehow fashion the material out of lingerie...

See you next time

Actually, that's not a totally out there idea at all, BDA-- (I'm SO proud. Smiley  )  I can certainly see it being done, if the right stuff were chosen.

I kinda already have an idea of what I'm looking for, though. So we'll see.

Right now, I just pass by it and laugh. So it's already well worth having purchased, no question.

i think the perfect lampshade would be green silk (or satin) with black fringe around the edge. sort of like the infamous italian "leg" lamp from "a christmas story" Grin

That is a totally awesome and glorious lamp! I love the forest green. If it was avacado I wouldn't be so thrilled, but as it, it is wonderful. Great buy!!

TSR, this is the mother of all tacky lamps...and I ADORE it. It is so beautifully trashy--Jacqueline Susann's Valley of the Dolls on steroids. Elvis would have had that lamp at Graceland (don't mess with THE KING's taste!!)

Isn't this lamp the color of OZ?  Dahling, you have divinely tacky taste. I love you.

That's funny, that is the first thing I thought of too when I read the lampshade discussion.  Cheesy

Funnier, GeniuneImitiation-- that type of lampshade in green is pretty much what I was thinking of myself! (Maybe not black fringe, but fringe for sure!)...

A major award! Smiley

And yes, SeSo, it's quite a green Oz green.... Pretty much like Depression Glass. (Which is why it actually doesn't look bad in my house. You know, in spite of it being the gaudiest lamp I've seen in while.)

Life is good. Smiley

Pleasepleaseplease show pics when you get it incorporated into your fab decorating scheme.

Do you know the Gaudy (Lamp) Thrifter's prayer?

"Gaud is gracious
Gaud is good
Let us thank Gaud
As we should"

Thank you, TSR, for buying a lamp that would make Jonathan Adler shreik in horror.

Ciao, Bellas
