I had to do some training at work today and something told me, "You know, I haven't been to the Goodwill in Commack, NY in a while. Maybe I'd better head up there."

So after work I did what the voice in my head said to do and it led me to probably the coolest - or maybe second-coolest - collection of thrift store albums EVER! What I got:

Aerosmith (the original album with Dream On)
Bruce Hornsby & The Range: Songs From The Southside
Shades Of Ian Hunter: The Ballad Of Ian Hunter & Mott The Hoople
Lighthouse: One Fine Morning (always a favorite song of mine, and what a groovy cover)
Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Rust Never Sleeps
Synergy: Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra
The Salsoul Orchestra: Christmas Jollies
The Kids From "Fame"
ZZ Top: Eliminator
And a Muzak demonstration album with real Muzak-brand elevator music!

What I didn't get:

Traffic: The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys
Roger Daltrey: Mc Vicar Soundtrack
The Yes Album
Jethro Tull: Aqualung
a couple of Van Halen albums
One or two more ZZ Tops
And various albums by Bananarama, Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake, Cinderella and Arlo Guthrie, to name a few. Maybe I'll be back for 'em if they're still there (Shhhh!)

You didn't buy the Traffic one???  Oh gosh, but if there is one song that just sounds right with the slight crackling of a vinyl recording... it has to be song "The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys!"

Thriftily (and musically),
Alexandra

I found Martin Denny''s greatest Hits on record and the album itself looked like someone dragged it behind the car on the way to donate it.
I''ve noticed that at least 75% of the records in some thrift stores are not even worth taking up space. The record sleeve may be split and way more often than not the condition of the actual albums is horrendous. Some have way more than just scratching, I''ve seen chunks missing from some albums.
I realize that some sleeves might be sold, but if the record and sleeve are wrecked throw them away.
I''m stunned that records are rarely sorted by at least saleability.

That''s heartbreaking. I''ve also seen chips and chunks, not to mention loads of album/jacket mismatches and covers without records even in them. Looking at some of those covers, I could only imagine what shape the record would be in if it were there.

I think the problem with sorting is resources. One thrift store owner recently confessed to me that records come in every day and they just don''t have the time to go through them all. And sure enough, the condition of the records there runs the gamut. I may ask about volunteering there or something just so the records worth selling get the treatment they deserve.

Those are some great finds. In all my years of thrifting, I have yet to buy an album.
It seems all I ever find are religious records, Mitch Miller and Lawrence Welk. Every once in awhile I will come across something that appeals to me and then one look at the vinyl makes my skin crawl. I bought about 250 albums this summer at garage sales at estate sales. Classic rock mostly, I plan on making a wall collage out of the album covers. I''ll post it when I am done.

Hi I'm Troy McClure, you might remember me from such celebrity funerals as Andre The Giant, We Hardly Knew Ye & Shemp Howard, Today We Mourn A Stooge.

Zed and Troy, I''d have given up Cookie to be able to have found that Velvet Underground record that sold for $180,000 Canadian dollars in a thrift store, lucky stiff!.

Not so fast, Michael. You''ve got another chance. It was a no-pay, so it''s back on sale to pre-approved buyers.
