I lucked into couple of groups of albums this week.
First, a nice collection of ska cassettes from Goodwill. Got some Bim Skala Bim, The Toasters, Let's Go Bowling (one still sealed), a couple of Mash It Up compilos, and a California Ska-Quake tape from 1992 with a track by No Doubt.
Then, 4 very nice Tomita LPs at the Sally out farther East: The Tomita Planets, Kosmos, Grand Canyon, and Canon Of The Three Stars. Great cover art on each, and each album has a different point of interest.
The Planets, as probably guessed, is Holst's suite with pieces for each planet. I read that Holst's family sued over the "manhandling" of their father's work on this album, so it got taken out of stores. Kosmos has the themes to Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey. On Grand Canyon Suite, side B is The Syncopated Clock (yes, the Leroy Anderson tune). This one's got my favorite cover art. And on Canon Of The Three Stars, "...Mr. Tomita has converted the wave forms of electromagnetic emanations from various stars and constellations into equivalent audio waves." Carl Sagan got a thank-you on this album.
I could have gotten Firebird too, but I already have it.
And now I have to go listen.
