I scored a pair of Magnepan SMG speakers on Friday at a GW store I frequent only so often because it's not on my usual routes.  The cost out the door was $23.97 after using my coupon.

For those who don't know, these are flat panel speakers which use a different technology than conventional speakers.

Anyway - I'll post pictures when I take some.

I have too much audio gear and really need to put on the brakes.

See you next time
Bye for now.

Congrats on your super-duper find. Look at it this way: You're in a bountiful moment, so ride the wave. As the world turns, there will be less-bountiful moments, I'm sure Grin. Enjoy the bounty.

You and me both! I'm really in it because I'm going to Kutztown this weekend for the antique radio fair at Renningers. No telling how much I'll come back with this time. Guess it's time for craigslist.

Find of the year so far on those Magnepans, though. That's about what, 1/10 of what anyone else would sell them for?

Well, they're missing the stands to set them upright, but that's a simple enough fix.  I'm not convinced that they're working in tip-top fashion, either.  They sound okay, but per most of the criticisms that I've read online, they lack bass and some definition.  I also think that the highs might not be coming through very well, so maybe there's a problem with the tweeter section...

Never having heard them for real, I can't rightly say.

I had to experiment with them for $24.00, though.  I'm going to keep an eye out for the MMG's (slightly smaller, slightly better sounding, from what I've heard), which right now can be had direct from the manufacturer for $550.00 for the pair (shipping included).  I do listen to a fair bit of jazz and classical, and for those they are supposed to be superb.  I don't have a home theater set up, so I'm not worried about that application.  I'm going to do some more research, and see if I can fabricate some stands out of some strip steel.  I'm still messing with them, to see what they're capable of.

The down side is that they're big, in a planar sort of way.  48" tall by 22" wide, by 2" deep.

I'm posting some shots to the "thrifted audio" section.

See you next time
bye for now.

I guess you really have to have a box of some sort to have great bass. You could always run them with a sub.
My Advent mini loudspeakers are awesome, also with no bass. I have them crossed over at 120 hz with a Polk Audio sub. The sub is finally in the right spot in the room and really sounds great. I keep saying to Cookie, "Doesn't that bass sound killer?!" "Yessss." She says for the millionth time.
Troy McClure was always into Carver Amazings with the 4, 12'' woofers and the 4 foot ribbon tweeters. I think he's got two pair.

Great score Big  Daddy. I owned some Maggies for a little while. They were the small ones, night be what you have.  I flipped them for about $500 back in 98.  Yes you should be able to make the stands out of 1 inch flat iron simple enough.  They were great for light jazz, but I listen to more rock and gave them up.  For $27 you can part them out and make  a quick small fortune.

I am waiting for you or  Zed to tell us you found a mint Mac amp for  $10 one of these days.  I want one even if it is  a door stop, they are so sexy...

There's an antique radio fair in Kutztown this weekend...no telling what crazy bargains I'll end up with! (and if I do see a Mac there that I can afford, I'll keep you in mind)
