Memphis in Memphis

American Museum Premier
November 18 Through February 3, 1985
Memphis Brooks
Museum of Art

There's a story about how I acquired this:

At the thrift where I found my Pyrex bowl earlier this week, I spotted this funky framed poster. The thrift wanted $10 for it, and I wasn't ready to fork over the $$.   But I really liked it!  I know so little about Memphis design, so I researched it and then really kicked myself for not getting it. I vowed to be at the thrift the next day when it opened (if I could fit it in my schedule) and pick up the poster if it were still there, fork over the cash, and be done with it.

I got to the thrift 1/2 hour early, which wasn't that easy considering it's a 30 minute drive for me. I really wanted this piece!  But something told me to get there early. Sure enough, cars started to pull in after me. I stood by the door (something told me to) and the volunteer let me in a few minutes early. I grabbed the poster and lucky thing I did, cause the people following me headed staight for the "art" section.  Go to find out:  all "art" was FIFTY PERCENT OFF! The place was busy within 1 minute of the doors opening. (Folks, always listen to your intuition when thrifting)  If I had gotten there when the store was opening, chances are I would have missed this great art at a greater price!

Since I had an extra $5, I picked up another piece which I had also admired the previous day, a piece signed by the artist and dated 1972:

It says:  "In these trees, God hides out loud"  Isn't that sweet?

I do have a weakness for thriftstore art. I have to walk away from a lot of stuff because I just don't have the room. But I can find room for these two, even if that means I have to recycle some of what I have.

Memphis design, BTW is fascinating. Did you know that Michael Graves belonged to that school?

My other great find this week, at another thrift, was this vintage Lenox lamp base for a buck:

It's in perfect condition.  I found it thrown in with all the electrical junk.  I brought it to the volunteers and told them "This is a Lenox vintage piece for a buck...do you want to re-mark it for more money and it put in the "collectibles" case?"  They were upset a little that it was mismarked but said, "No but Thank You for offering. It's yours, you found it. We'll be more careful in the future."  It is a special piece to me now. You know, I am not a Lenox fan or  but this piece is just beautiful and lines are so clean.   Here's the mark, for anybody who's interested:

Of course, now DH has to rewire said lamp base...

Happy Thrifting,
SeSo

Your thrift intuition definitely paid off!  Even the leaving and coming back paid off for you because you got it cheaper the next day.  I have had that same experience where I feel I "must" get something, and if I leave, I usually rush back in a tearing hurry and hope all the way there that someone else hasn't taken it.  This happened a couple of months ago with a porcelain figurine I liked.  The store wanted $11.00 for it, so I passed.  When I got home, I found a similar one on eBay for $239!!  It wasn't exactly the same as the one I saw, but it was close enough for me to jump in the car and drive back to get it.  I found out mine is only worth $40, but I really like it so I probably won't sell it.

Nice Catch, Cookie!  What was the figurine...may I ask?

Now that would make a nice book..."Thrift Intuition" or a topic for the magazine? (Hint Hint)

We could call it Thrift Intuition: More Than a Feeling.

Here's a photo of the one that's similar to mine going for $235.  This one is taller than mine, and I guess the taller ones are more valuable.  It's a Josef Originals figurine.

Congrats! Sounds like this week has been really good to thrifters in general. I'm happy for you!

I like that title, Cookie Smiley!

I can't believe you found a Josef Original in a thrift!  She is gorgeous!  Is Josef California Pottery? Does she have that little sticker on her? And for 11 bucks, too. Great!

I have a few pieces that I got many years ago, on eBay. I have two cats (with stickers, la-de-dah. I guess that's a selling point for collectors)and a birthday angel.  I have them put away for now.

That's a great find for you SeSo and what a wonderful price!

Those Josef originals go for quite a bit but the birthday ones aren't as collectable as the other ones.  I come across a few of those every once in a while at a thrift.  I've had 2 that I bought at a thrift in Tampa, one was a lady playing a harp and the other one was a woman all dressed up including her bonnet.  They were so pretty.  They just don't make beautiful stuff like that today.

Hi ChrisMiss! How are you doing?

Yes, the Josef figurines of the beautiful ladies are breath-taking in their delicacy and detail. I've never seen one in a thrift.  Did you pay a lot for yours when you found them in Tampa?  Did you find them recently?  I've never been thrifting over in the Tampa area.  Do you recommend it?

Ciao,

Hey SeSo, I'm doing okay.  The thrifting in Tampa is probably like anywhere else in FL, pretty good.  I've really lucked out on a lot of great stuff in Tampa.  Sarasota was pretty good too when I've thrifted there.  I've been to Orlando a few times and had some good luck but I really prefer the Tampa/St. Pete area.  It's a huge area to cover and I could probably go thrift shopping every day and still not hit all the stores around there.

I didn't pay much for the figurines that I found, less than $3.00 each for them.  I've seen a couple of the birthday ones but I didn't get them; I didn't like them as much as the "women" figurines.   I picked mine up a couple of years ago I think.  It's just a matter of being at the right thrift store at the right time.  Some woman had just picked up one right before me.  It had her name on it and that's why she got it.  Thankfully she didn't get the other one that I liked so I got to get it.

I found a birthday one a while ago with the sticker still on it and gave it to my mom since it was her birthday month, May.  It was only $1.00 and in perfect condition.  The one I found with the parasol still has the sticker on it, too.  She is in my glass case in our bedroom with my other favorite things I've thrifted, perfume bottles, Avon swans and cats, etc.

Rock on, SeSo! I love that second pic! Grin If you ever take a notion to be shed of it, please let me know. Grin

And, Cookie, that Joseph has me drooling! I found a little Joseph birthday gal for 25 cents and a mouse with an ice cream cone for 49 cents, but I have never come across a Joseph that big! Wowza!

Yeah, I think that Josef in the picture is eight inches tall or so.  I've never seen one that big in person, either.  Mine is only five inches, but I was still thrilled to find it.  It's a girl with a parasol, too, but not as fancy.
