While shopping at one of our 2 St. Vincent de Paul stores this past Saturday, I noticed a bookshelf that was missing some hardware and needed a re-finishing.
As I examined it, I noticed a sticker on the back which read, "Made with Pride by Florida Inmates". That sealed the deal for me.
As most of you know, Cookie and I read alot of true crime. What better way to house some of our books than on shelves made by inmates.
I bought some new shelf supports at an Ace Hardware and cleaned up the shelves in the garage.
We are overloaded with books and desperately needed the extra space.
I have known that inmates had wood shops, but hadn't yet seen any furniture built by them.

I have a very nice wooden desk made at the prison in Leavenworth (sp?) Kansas.  Its dated 1974, but I've seen similar prison desks dated from the 50's through the early 80's.

Ciao buddy!

We see a ot of the stuff made in federal prisons here in Northern Virginia as the Gov't and military uses a lot of it.  I got my desk when the USMC was throwing a bunch of them out.

BTW - Is that the bowling pin you want to convert to a lamp?

Out if Florence, AZ, there is a store right near the state prison.  I'll stop in the next time I'm in the area.  I've never been in there, so I have no idea what they have in the store.
I know there's a trailer company in Buckeye, AZ that uses inmates on work furlough for labor, teaching them welding and other manufacturing skills in the process.

That is all.

That is a nice bookcase, and how appropriate that it houses your true crime books.  I don't believe that I've seen any items created by inmates.  I'll now have to keep my eyes open.

The Maine State Prison used to have a great store with stuff made by inmates. (I was there about 20 years ago. VISITING. Sheesh.) I have a cribbage board that came from there--and also a book of prisoners' poetry, some of which is quite good.

Finding stuff with a story...that's one of the main reasons I thrift.

My Gf has a coffee table that was made by inmates in the NY State system , it is very simple, but huge slabs of Oak have to 2 1/2 inches thick. I am not sure if they make them that heavy so they can't heave them at each other if a riot breaks out.

She worked in a psych hospital and  the prison system made all of the furniture in the common areas.....
