A couple weeks ago, one of the Vietnam thrifts was the recipient of a Pioneer LaserDisc player and a bunch of discs. Since yesterday was double tag Sunday, the old color tag was on sale along with the new color...which was yellow. And that meant that all those LaserDiscs were finally half price! Very few of them moved in the two weeks they were there (maybe 2 that I can name), so I had plenty to pick from. I took home...

Patriot Games (which I just finished watching)
The Fugitive
Father Of The Bride
A League Of Their Own
Silence Of The Lambs
Dances With Wolves
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Forrest Gump (Deluxe edition)
The Big Chill (Criterion edition - widely regarded for bonus material and high quality)
Hunt For Red October
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
A Few Good Men
Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 (which I also have on Beta, believe it or not)

As a bonus, all but Red October and T2 are widescreen, so I get the full image with no bars when I zoom it on my HDTV.

Passed up The Sound Of Music, 12 O'Clock High, Green Berets, and Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom. I may change my mind on that one in hopes I can also get Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Last Crusade (which I spotted at another Vietnam thrift today).

The usual stupid pricing rules applied, with each disc marked between $1.99 (Red October) and $8.99 (Lambs, T2). Overall, each minty-nice disc cost me a litttle over $3 per after discount, with the entire lot going for $48 including our steep 8.625% sales tax.

As another bonus, I picked up a very cool Richard Hayman synth album called Genuine Electric Latin Love Machine. Amazing cover! And the tunes ain't bad either. A few minutes earlier and I also could've gotten Dick Hyman's MOOG album. Oh well...I made up for that, I guess, with a free craigslist score on some Boston Acoustics A150 speakers. So definitely a happy day!

Oh, and we seem to be back now from whatever downage thing we were suffering from.

Wow, you did great!   Get the Indiana Jones series if you can, those are classic!  But even so, the ones you got are probably the same ones I would have wanted to come home with!  congrats!

I hope to expand our Laser Disc collection to more than the 1 we have so far.
I need to run a yellow video RCA from my disc player to my receiver. I do have sound though. I just need to find a patch cord.
I'd have bought many that you got..

Nice find Zed!

Some really excellent titles there. There are a bunch that are in my own rotation for Favorite Films to Watch on a Rainy Weekend.

Way to go!

I finally figured out how to hook up the video to my Pioneer Laser Disc Player.
Unfortunately I only HAD one disc. A black and white Disney cartoons disc.
Today we went to Cocoa to drop off a friends hand truck he'd lent us for our recent move.
In Melbourne we went to a thrift that really wasn't that great, but as we were paying for the 3 books we did find, I spotted a pile of laser discs in the front display. As we were looking at them I asked the price, $3 each.
We got five discs of Star Trek the next Generation and Bill and Ted's both movies as well as Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club. They were all used but in excellent shape.
I was really impressed with the video and sound quality.
One more thing to start really looking for.

We were going to meet up with SeSo, but she went south while we went north.
I'll be sure to let her and Pete know more in advance than that morning that we'd like to get together.

sounds like great choices!  I haven't tried laser yet, still at dvd (but at least not stuck at VHS)!   Haven't done much thrifting lately either - either iced or snowed in 3 days of each week for the past month - kids will have a lot of school to make up!

Sweet score.  Was this shop Selden, Island, or North Shore Thrift?  I used to find some good stuff at those stores.

See you next time
bye for now

North Shore. They're kinda hit-or-miss, but occasionally there's good stuff there still.

And sure enough, about a half-dozen discs were still there! Top Gun (which I have), Fish Called Wanda, and Temple Of Doom.

All-time great moment: LDs are in with the records because of their size. And a few discs apart from each other were Star Trek II: Wrath Of Khan...and a Chaka Khan record! I shoulda taken a picture. The Wrath Of Chaka Khan...wow, I amuse myself.

Welcome back BDA, you've been missed!
Sorry for your pains, I know it was horrible. They say it's the only pain men have that's comparable to giving birth. Oooouch!

Isn't that one of the later Ed Wood films?
