Wow, a great score on the Fossil bag, plus you made your friend happy, that is the coolest thing. That's like the "trifecta" of thrifting, you find a great item, at a great price, then you get to make a friend happy Cheesy

wow, how great that was to find a coach purse. over labor day weekend, i came across a dooney and bourke doodle style handbag that was marked $2.48, and everything in the store was half off that day so, i paid $1.24 for the bag, i am saving it to give to a friend of mine as well, as i have no use for it, lol.... its so amazing when you find items like these on the treasure hunts....

We saw a Louis Vuitton handbag today at the Humane Society TS. It was beige, over the shoulder, condition hard to tell. It was under glass. Price tag . . . $199

Okay that would feed a lot of animals. But come on . . . GD@17 was me and she said Louie is not even so hot anymore. I told her it will either find a home or stay until it gets a big price reduction.

I do hate to shop for handbags and wallets. I don't know one brand from another. I just buy what I like.

I guess it depends on what kind of a bag it is, if it is a newer high demand style or a large bag it might be worth that much.  There are alot of older style Coach's in good condition for reasonable prices on Ebay these days.  Some people still think of Coach as very high end, which it can be, but now that TJ Maxx & Marshalls carry Coach, Dooney etc.  You don't have to pay big bucks for them anymore.  Back in November I was at a thrift & a lady picked up a large Coach black bucket bag for 3 bucks, I was mad I missed that one.  I did find some stoneware that was more valuable than the bag though so I couldn't be too mad, if I had snatched up both that day I would have gone skipping out of the store!

I did get three vintage style Dooney & Bourke bags the week before Christmas, they were in great shape & were 5, 6 & 8 dollars

Not only that but LV bags are notorious for being pirated.  I'd wager any amount of money that for every legitimate LV bag there is in the USA, there are at least 50 fakes.

Unless they were going to GUARANTEE its authenticity, then they can keep the bag, even for $10.00, because that's what it'd cost you on Canal Street in NYC.

My GW started carrying higher end purses at extemely silly prices lately too. They had a coach bag hanging on the wall behind the register for $100.00. It was an all leather one and the leather looked like it had never been oiled or cleaned and had huge scratches on the bottom from being dragged around. This summer I bought the same EXACT purse at a St. Vinnie's in Ann Arbor for $10.00, except my purse's previous owner believed in using leather cleaner and conditioner and mine is in awesome condition even though I beat the heck out of it. To heck with GWs new pricing and "updated image".

As a side note, using a good leather cleaner and conditioner can keep the even cheap leather looking nice and nice leather looking awesome for almost forever.

I scored a brand new Kathy Van Zeeland bag at my fave thrift shop this weekend!  It was $25.00 and I don't normally splurge like that, but I thought what the heck and treated myself.   Smiley  Plus they normally go for more than a hundred bucks!

It's pathetic when you go to GW stores and they have prices jacked up so high on name brand bags that no one will buy them.

Is Fossil that big of a deal?  I'm pretty clueless where handbags are concerned, but I've been carrying a Fossil that I got at Village Thrift for $2 a few months ago, and thought the price was what it should be for a secondhand purse.

If $2 was a steal, what *should* it have sold for?

This is so true.

It's so amusing that the prices on "higher-end" items in the thrift shops around me tend to reflect the fashion knowledge of the staff. There is a black/brown Ralph Lauren bag that's been sitting behind the counter for quite a while at one of the GWs I frequent. I haven't looked at it to see the price, because I would never even consider buying it, it's so hideous.

But, at that same store, I found a like-new Kidrobot laptop/messenger bag stuffed in one of the bins, for $6.00

The RL bag was probably purchased at one of those department stores that line every mall, and the bag itself has been "out of style" for ages, if it was ever "in". (Not that pay much attention, but, whatever.)

The Kidrobot bag could be purchased at one of five stores, and the bags have limited-edition artwork and basic styles, so there's no "that's so last season!" factor involved.

Sorry for being long-winded, I just thought it was amusing. Tongue

Depending on the style, a new Fossil handbag could cost as low as $58 and up to over $200.  The most expensive bag I've found on the website was $430, but the "median price" is about $120.

So, congrats on your steal! Smiley

(sorry for the double-post, I wanted to reply to this. Tongue)

I never gave Fossil bags a second look either until this year when I saw how much some of them go for on Ebay!  I would grab a nice all leather bag if I saw one at a cheap price.  I did see a new-looking Dooney & Bourke handbag the other day, cute newer style.  It was $5.99, I was tempted to buy it but it is so hard to tell the authenticity of the newer Dooney's because some are actually made in China now, so the fact that it had a made in China tag is not neccessarily bad.  It did also have a real looking Dooney & Bourke tag inside w/serial number.  I decided it wasn't worth the headache in the event is was not authentic.  If I had wanted it for myself I would have bought it.

Some of the newer Coach bags will go for those prices, the older ones are the ones not much in demand. IMO, they should have stuck with the all leather styles, the new fabric logo covered ones don't hold up as well.

Coach and Dooney & Bourke are two classic examples of lower end (in the realm of luxury handbags) that have gone nuts with pricing trying to compete with the higher end bags. They are trying to re-create themselves into something covetable, but they are easily affordable for those of middle income means. I don't mean any offense by this remark, or to sound like I'm being snobbish about those brands, as I think they each have some lovely styles, but there is a huge difference in quality between those and say Prada, Gucci or LV. (Although these have all gone completely out of control with pricing.) Same with Kate Spade, I think those bags are made terribly and not worth the exorbitant price tags.
