Just registered, and so it's my first post.

Fairly new to thrift shopping, but my favorite bargain came a few weeks ago.

The store had a "collectibles" section under lock and key which included the first 3 Harry Potters, hardbound, still in special packaging and plastic wrap, for 16 bucks.  HUGE fan of the series, and that would easily have sold retail for about 60-70, or going off of the current prices of the books, about 90.  Aside from small dents in the packaging from handling, and little tears in the plastic wrap, it's in absolutely mint condition.

Great find!  And welcome.
I'm a litle bummed by your find though.  When my daughter was in 5th grade (now a soph in college) I found her a gift pack of three books about this boy wizard.  It was close to Christmas ans I thoguth "Hmm, bet this would be a great present."
Well, it was.  She knew exactly who HP was (I didn't, but heck I was an adult so what did I know?) ripped the package open and, well, let's just say NO ONE would pay me anything for those books.  And I think one of the books has gone missing over the years. Who knew they would be worth anything all these years later.
I still have my Severus Snape (my favorite character!) ornament I found in a thrift a few years back, he still sneeers at me on my tree every Christmas and I still put him back in his original box every Jan.  Maybe someday.

Because the Harry Potter books have been mass produced they are not actually very valuable for resale.  The true first edition of the first US book is one of the few valuable US Harry Potter books.  The audio books do pretty well for resale, I have never seen one of those at a thrift.    All the Harry Potter books say first edition for some strange reason even if they aren't a first edition so don't go by that.  Nice to find a set in mint condition though if you are a fan.

My daughter is a huge HP fan but unfortunately I haven't found too many HP collectibles at thrifts.  Nowadays any little Harry Potter thing gets overpriced anyway.  The few things I have found are a Hallmark HP mug that is apparently HTF and goes for 30-40 bucks or more on Ebay, I got mine for less than $1.00.  NIP HP viewmaster set from the first movie.  Mattel Hagrids Hut playset and Hagrid's gift figure.  I have also purchased other figures and stuff like greeting cards, stationary etc.  when they used to be priced less than a dollar, but now when I see stuff like that it is 5 dollars or something ridiculous.

We went to the Harry Potter exibit at the Boston Museum of Science back in Jan.  it is a traveling exibit that was going around the U.S & Canada.  If it stops at a museum by you I recommend it, it has the costumes & set items from the actual movies, not reproductions.

If you can catch a Harry & the Potters show they are a fun band.  They are college students, but do tour pretty often.

We went to the Yule Ball they do in Boston every year, it was fun.  Draco and the Malfoys played, but they did all their songs in a bluegrass format because they were there with some other band members from a blue grass group they also perform with.  Not really my thing, but Harry & the Potters were excellent as usual.

You should watch the We are Wizards movie if you like the wizard rock bands.  I saw it at an independant film festival it is really good.
