Today I took a mental health day off work  Grin  and had a nice time at the Goodwill. Just gotta brag about my scores, even though some of them were rather high-priced, in my opinion. But I liked the stuff well enough to pay.

1) A gorgeous Catherinholm orange enamel saucepan --$4.99 (here's one in a different color  http://www.digmodern.com/product/T776448/vintage_cathrine_holm_norway_modern_saucepan_green_leaf.html )
2) A Pyrex divided dish with cover in the barbed wire pattern --$4.99
3) A Samsonite 1960s oval card table (that I'm going to recover) --$4.50
4) A Berggren cup and creamer (it's a Swedish folk porcelain) --49 cents and 99 cents

Wow! Awesome finds.

I found nothing today at GW. I don't think I like GW so much anymore. They jack up their prices on jumk and even on furniture that I think I could refinish, they have high prices on it so it's not worth buying. I like Thrift Village much better and Last Chance Thrift. Seems like they are very on to the Ebay concept now that they have their own auction site and somebody is pricing the items way out of line. Oh well, there are other good places.

I have never seen an oval card table.  It sounds wonderful.  What will you recover it with?

Neat finds!  And compared to what you would have spent buying the items elsewhere, they were a bargain. I especially like the card table because I've never seen an oval one. And of course, the Pyrex because I love stuff that is useful, interesting and pretty.

I'm going to use some type of vinyl, but I haven't decided yet. I'd like to find something close to the original stuff---a textured vinyl, black and white scritchy-scratchy design, very 50s/60s. There is a lot of cool vinyl for sale on the Web now; I've bought Mexican tablecloth vinyl to make aprons and tablecloths, and lots of crafty young things make purses out of it. The top comes off if you unscrew the little L-brackets on the underneath side. While I have it off to recover I'm going to repaint the metal frame with a Rustoleum spray-on flat black paint (the same as the original, but it could use repainting). It's in great shape mechanically, though.

I really haven't had a need for a card table much, but this one was so nice I had to get it.

Loveit, I wish we had more choices of thrifting places here in southern Indiana. Besides two local church thrifts (which are great), we only have two Goodwills and one Salvation Army (in my town, Bloomington, that is). Indianapolis is an hour north, and they have lots of thrifts, but I rarely drive up there anymore. I used to commute there to work and would stop in at places. That was over 15 years ago and at that time could still find cool things.

And I agree, ever since eBay and Antique Roadshow, Goodwills seem to be pricing everything waaaay too high.

The orange saucepan sounds fun, very Rachel Ray (she has a line of orange cookware).  You actually have alot more thrift variety than me, just two Sal Army's & a smaller independant thrift here.  There is a large Sal Army about 1/2 hour from here too, but the prices tend to be even higher at that one.  I am probably lucky to find the amount of stuff that I do.  Can hardly wait for tag sale season, should be just a few weeks now!

I went to Goodwill on Saturday.  It has the oldest tag or label on sale for 10 cents housewares and 25 cents for clothes on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

It's out of town so I can't make it during the week but it's frustrating to go on Saturday because they are busy taking all the items with that oldest tags off the floor.  Only they don't actually take the clothes off the floor; instead they throw them on the floor.

Yeah. gigantic heaps of clothes on the floor and even if you were inclined to look through them, you really can't because everything is mixed together.  You will have some kids clothes, some women's clothes, some linens, etc. all in a heap.

Then they usually have the oldest color household items in bins at the back of the store and of course by Saturday i would expect them to be pretty picked over which they are.

But I also found that now they are recycling items from store to store.  The items that didn't sell at that store go to another store for another try at selling them and then onto another store.

The Goodwill employee on the floor explained this to me and said it makes a lot more work to get things ready to ship which is why they have to work all day Saturday to get things ready to ship.  She also said that they start with the knick=knicks, things that need to be packed a little which is why when I get there on Saturday there are only some plastic items, things like the throw=away plastic containers, coffe mugs without lids and items like that, on the sale table.

Despite all that, I did manage to get a great deal, a magnifying floor work light that even comes with an adapter so you could use it as a desk light.  It was marked 19.99 (which I thought was terribly high) but was still out on the floor, evidentally missed y the moving to the back, so it was 10 cents.  I was happy.

But jsut wanted to say, anyone shopping Goodwill should check their policies and see if this is going on because I don't want you to miss out on something because it has been taken off the floor early!

GW's in both of the larger cities near me have their own outlet stores for the stuff that doesn't sell. I need to hit them up- I haven't shopped at either in some time (neither are in convenient locations). That said, it seems like any of the GW that have moved into their own, purpose built, fancy new stores have much higher prices then ones still in rental locations. Makes you wonder how much of the money they make is going to help the needy vs paying for the fancy new buildings?

With that said, I did hit the jackpot at one of the older GW last week. I almost didn't stop, as it was 30 minutes to closing time & I was tired from having shopped at several other thrift shops. I'm so glad I did stop- a complete Cuisinart DLC8 food processor, with extra attachments including the pasta maker for $6 and a large waffle iron with removable plates that make pizzle cookies on the reverse side. I've always wanted a pizzle maker, but couldn't justify a unitasker, but I needed another waffle iron so I can make up larger batches to freeze all at once. The Cuisinart food processor was just plan under priced- I'd been bidding much higher just trying to get an accessories garage for my DCL10's attachments on Ebay. I'm keeping the DCL8, as it has an 11 cup work bowl, compared to the 7 cup the DCL10's have; but I'm probably going to sell one of the DCL10's on EBAY (I paid $5 for one & $2.50 for the other one...I'm such a big spender-lol), along with the pasta making attachment for the DCL8, as I have pasta attachments for my KitchenAid mixer, along with manual pasta roller w/multiple attachments). Checking out Ebay, it looks like the pasta attachment goes for $30-50 lately...with would help make up for a lot of my thrifting $$$ nicely.

Wow, that's great to get the Cusinenart and with the attachments!  Good idea about having another waffle maker.  I love waffles, but don't make them often because of the time involved making one at a time.  Unfortunately all the waffle maker I have seen at the thrifts have been crap, but I'm going to keep looking.

I hope you get to those outlet stores near you because I'd like to hear about them.

Good find on the Cuisinart!  I would love to get a better food processor, one that doesn't smell like burnt rubber when I use it.  YUCK!
