Yesterday went off to my favorite thrift.  Found a great cake pan, a swan, really pretty.  Added to my collection of cake pans I never use.   A belt buckle for DS, heavy silver with a mallard duck engraved on it.  A souvenir linen towel, new with sticker still on it.  Went to the book department.  BINGO!!!!!!!
Great find.  Three brand new sewing books  on couture sewing, 2 for $.90 each. one for $.60, a book on applique and quilting, also $.90 and two new books on couture knitting (for DD) also $.90 each, with price tags of $18.95 and $21.95.  I was so happy!!!!  All for the grand total of $12 plus tax for everything. All in all, a great day at the thrift shop.

Congrats on the book score!  I have far too many sewing and needlework books.  I cannot resist them.

Congrats on the books! Books are my favorite thing to look for too! Sounds like you scored in a field you collect, isn't that so fun! My nearby thrift store, "Bishop's Attic", has a 10 for $1.00 sale for one week every month & I have learned when the nice retired "book lady" puts the books out. Get "em" while they're fresh! I look for "Trade Paperbacks" both for me to read & to trade at my local used book stores, for credit for books that I want. I could probably do better selling on www.half.com or something but I am not organized enough for that so I just have fun trading for credit at the used book stores in Anchorage. What one doesn't take another will take, so it works out well. It's entirely my main hobby.....Anyway, you did well! Enjoyed your post!

I've discovered Thursday or early Fridays are  the best days for finding books.  The staff start putting them out then for the week-end.  By Sat they are pretty picked over so I aim for one of those two days.

At my nearby thrift store, "Bishop's Attic", (4-5 blocks away from where I live), the lady puts them out on Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays's between 10:00 & 12:00. There have been times when I've literally followed behind her plucking good books! Not so sure she appreciates that! She's good natured about it though. Years ago I used to see a man who owned a used book store in downtown Anchorage who would go to this thrift store when the books were put out & buy them up for his book store. Haven't seen him there in ages though. Anchorage has some terrific use book stores, one that is sort of like Barnes & Noble only not a chain & all used, they have grown amazingly in the 17 years I've lived here, moved 3 times to larger quarters. Then there's this smaller, older, old style type used book store downtown, it's got "dusty piles", the owners know where everything is if you can't find it. I haven't been there for ages, need to check it out again.....Guess this is off track of the thrift subject just a bit, do other people get used books at thrifts then trade them at used book stores for credit?

Great deal on the books.  I seldomly find any books I am looking for at my thrifts.  I have better luck at yard sales.  Yesterday I was at one that had a box of free magazines including a bunch of Home Companion, Country Home, Victoria, etc.  I miss Home Companion since it went out of print so I was glad to pick up some that I hadn't read before.

We often will buy issues of magazines that we might enjoy. Especially vintage magazines of any kind. You can really see the signs of the times in the articles and the advertisements.
We probably have too many but we'll enjoy them some time and then donate them when we're done with them.

The thrift stores around here don't sell magazines, maybe they don't want everyone dumping off all their old magazines, especially since many people drop off stuff after hours and leave it outside.  Once in a great while they might have an interesting vintage magazine.  The good Sal Army will occasionally put magazines up by the register that people can take for free.  A few months back they had a bunch of 70's magazines, I took some they were fun to read.

Especially for prices like that, I will never pass any sewing or crafty books.....they are SO inspirational. There are so many ideas to share; every day there is something new to learn or teach.
