i'd try the toothpaste SeSo. i'd also try citrisolve, which is what finally cleaned the mineral deposits off my shower glass, and is also a "green" cleaner.
good luck.

Wow, that toothpaste trick is amazing!  Definitely worth a try if it means the cloudiness will be gone permanently.  I'm going to have to remember that one.

(Thank God Good Buddy found those books last Saturday.  I'm telling you....he was NOT happy until he found those.  Shocked  It was definitely his day for a thrifting bonanza.)

Hey Everybody! Thank you all so much for your recommendations and sharing your experiences regarding cleaning cloudy glasses.

We tried them all, and alas, our glasses remained "sick". So today we returned them to the thrift, where the manager cheerfully and kindly refunded hubby's hard-earned $$.

Here's the funny part: Over Christmas, I had found many Anchor Hocking glasses, pretty much a full set, recently made, which appeared to be cloudy. They were .29 a piece, and then on sale at 1/2 price. About a month ago, I found many more in a different size, in a different thrift store. The funny part--they all came sparklingly clean and look very classy and elegant. They are not the "better" glass--there's hardly any heft to them, but they are very lovely for everyday use. It's suprising though, that they came clean and the Franciscans didn't.  I guess it's a crap shoot. Lessons learned...

I appreciate very much all the information you guys provided. Rest assured that I was able to buy something else today that is just incredible and is in perfect working condition (yeay!).  I'll post that separately. You guys are great! Smiley Smiley

I'm so sorry that you had to return the glasses.  It sounds like whoever had them before washed them in the dishwasher instead of by hand.  Those harsh chemicals will ruin glasses when used over time.  I had bought some glasses that were cloudy and tried to clean them but never could get it off.
