Went to several Goodwills this weekend and didn't thrift much everything appeared picked over. Was ready to throw in the towel after 2 days of thrifting when I started looking through a box of books pushed in the corner. Most of it was cooking with Oprah and microwave cookbooks. I found one cookbook that caught my attention with its title alone. White Trash Cooking by Ernest Matthew Mickler. All the recipes are country southern cooking and several I will never even attempt to cook. Fried Squirrel, Mama Leila's Hand-Me-Down Oven Brown Possum, Dana Pullen's Chicken Feet and Rice and my all time favorite Day Old Fried Fish (Cold & Pickled). There are several more recipes of this type but there is also others that do tempt the palate like Lady Godiva Pecan pie, Esther's Chicken Casserole made From Scratch and Kiss Me Not Sandwhich. Usually this GW charges extra for any cookbook that is unique, this one didn't have a price so I took it to the counter and was only charged .50 cent. I paid for it and almost ran from the store before the manager could change his mind and say it was mispriced. My only other score was a pair of new Doc Martens shoes with tag for $15.

Good scores, Em!  I think the only thing I'd eat from that cookbook is the pecan pie, though.  Southern cooking doesn't cater to vegetarians.  Tongue

One of my cookbooks has a page of "roadkill recipies" as I call them.  I think its the Farm Journal Country Cookbook I have from the mid 50's.  I'll have to find it.

Your post reminded me of a song my daughter came home from camp with - fried ham, fried ham, cheese and bologna.....we were just singing it over the Christmas holiday. She's 34 and I'm old enough to be her mother. What's that say about us?Huh I think we're changing the lyrics, dedicated to you. Fried squirrel, fried squirrel, cheese and bologna. We'll have onions, pickles and peppers, then we'll have more FRIED SQUIRREL!!!   what can i say? it's monday and the whole day pretty much bit the big one.
