Hi,

Picked up a Fire King jade-ite bowl.  [Assume it's jade-ite based on what I can tell about form and color.]  Was a mixing bowl, roughly 7 inches in diameter at top.  Also picked up 2 plates that match the color and texture at Goodwill.  Bowl was $4 at Savers along with something else I bought with a coupon.  Plates were half price, so $1 for 2 on a Goodwill 50 percent Saturday.

Have a few other Anchor Hocking items, so I thought I'd see what kind of interest there is in Anchor Hocking, Fire King etc. here.  Also, thought I'd provide a diversion from the Pyrex discussions.

Just so you know, you've got to really watch the Jadeite.  The prices on Jadeite have really crashed in the past few years because Fire King re-released it about 5 years ago.  You've got to really know what you're looking at to be able to tell if its new or old.  Because of that the casual collectors stopped buying it, and the price crashed.

Hi Jay,

Pretty sure that the bowl is old.  Plates could be new.

Thanks

Bowls around here are usually in the $30-$40 range. Even the repros aren't cheap (I haven't seen bowls myself, just salt and pepper shakes and canisters).

I LOVE the color of Jade-ite... just such pretty glass. And I don't know about you, but I don't care whether it's marketable at the moment. It looks great. And it'll come back around again.

It ALL comes back around again.

For what you paid, even if it were a repro, it was still a good deal.

Congrats on the Jadite finds. I agree with TSR, it's a lovely color. I have my late MIL's sugar bowl. It is in perfect mint condition. When she and late FIL stopped using sugar, they put it away on a top shelf way back in the kitchen and never used it again. I have it in my china cabinent.

Jay, how can you tell a re-issue? The only way I know mine is real is cause it was my in-laws and hubby remembers it on the table as a child.

A few weeks ago I was in a GW and thought I found a perfect Jadite bowl. There was even the print on the bottom under glaze, though faded or not that deep to begin with, or maybe my AARP eyes are finally shot. I had to hold the bowl this way and that to be able to read it, and it said "China". I knew it was too good to be true, lol.

Fiestaware did the same thing about ten years ago, I believe with reissues. I found some Fiestaware around that time, but I believe mine is the real thing. However, I held on to it and I don't know if it's worth anything anymore, since the reissues may have dropped the prices.

We never did much in terms of Fire King anyway, and when the common folk stopped paying for it we pretty much stopped buying it.  Some of the repros are marked "Fire King 75th anniversary", or something like that.  Not sure exactly which anniversary they did that.  Since we were not experts or big dealers in Fire King, and the market dried up we just got out of the jadeite business unless we find pieces that were not reproduced.

Re-issues of Fiestaware have not signifigantly effected the prices of the vintage stuff, as the recipies for the different colors of glaze they used have been lost to time.  The repros are not the same color.  Of course the most expensive vintage Fiestaware is the red.  The original red was made with uranium in the glaze, and if used on a regular basis will give you radiation poisoning.  Because of this a lot of it was thrown away in the 60's.

Martha Stewart was in part responsible for the soaring prices and surge in demand for Jadite. I suppose she is also in part responsible for it's decline. Prior to her unfortunate residential restraint, the jadite was prominantly visible in her kitchen segments. I think the reissue was based on the demand that was created by her show.

For an inexperienced eye it can be difficult to tell the old from the new. There is, however, a distinct difference in color between the two. The new has a slightly more gray cast, for lack of a better description. The old is just a shade brighter.

Once jadite became difficult to find and the prices soared, it's cousin delphite began to accelerate in value. It's the pretty shade of light blue. The molds for the two were almost always the same.

I can't decide which I prefer, the green or the blue!! One nice thing about the blue is that Fire King also made clear blue glass that goes well with the delphite. All in all, it doesn't really matter as I just love all colored glass!!

Congrats on the buy! It's always fun to discover treasures.

Delphite! So Delphite is what the jade-ite-ish Fire King blue bowl I have is! HA!

I had it at work and brought it home, thinking it was jade-ite, only NEXT to my jade-ite, it was clearly blue and not aqua.

Ah, now it has a name! YAY!

The Delphite is worth more than Jadeite as the dephite has never been re-issued, and it was more rare than the jadeite to begin with.  I have a set of blue delphite mixing bowls I take to shows once in a while.  I think we have them priced at $195 for the set.  I can't remember exactly now.

I have a couple of delphite lunch plates (or dessert plates?) of Fire King that I bought at yard sales back in the late 70s for probably a dime or quarter each!   used them many times over the years, never careful with them but they are still in one piece.....

Wow, I picked up a Fire King bowl, just because i liked it, and then started wondering about it.  So I came here to see if anyone had discussed it, and found this wealth of information.  Thank you so much everyone--you rock!

It's great to have people share this information.  this way, when someone asks me aobut my dish i can give a more intelligent answer than "duh, I dunno."
