Yesterday DD an I were out thrifting and yard saling, our favorite Saturday activity.  The local Women's club was having their annual sale, so we stopped in.  Not much of interest until we got to the jewelry section.  I picked up this unusual, to say the least, necklace.  Gold, vaguely native
American design on it.  I looked at it closely and almost burst out laughing when I realized what I held.  It was trephinning scapel?  knife?  tool?  Whatever  you call it, I had seen one in a museum some years ago.  For those of you who have never heard of it, trephinning is the procedure of drilling a hole in someone's skull, to who knows, let the demons out.  Primitive brain surgery, although more than one skull has been unearthed showing the hole that has healed.  Practiced for centuries just about all over the world, perfected it is thought by the Incas, several thousand years ago.  DD took one look and fell in love  with it.  It was $15, more than she could afford on a student budget but her birthday was Thursday and her gift still in back order He!! so I bought it for her.  I asked the lady at the jewelry counter if she knew what it was and she said yes but no one believed her.
When we got it home and looked at it closely, it seems to be a piece of homemade jewelry, someone drilled a hole in the end, and added the jump ring (metals didn't match) and a crappy chain.  We replaced the ring  and the chain and it looks much better now.  DD wore it to work yesterday and said only one person even came close to guessing what it was and she guessed some kind of ritual tool.
So my off beat find of the day.  DD says she will wear it when she wants to channel her inner
Abby (NCIS fans will get that one.)  I'm sure it is a reproduction and no one actually had their brains re-arranged with it but interesting to speculate.
Speculate too on where that kid gets her sense of humor;)
