In my thrifting experiences I''ve noticed trends in audio and video media turning up in thrifts.
As long as I''ve been thrifting I''ve seen 8-track tapes and still see them.
The explosion of DVDs has resulted in VHS movies flooding thrift shops. Yesterday we went to Clermont, about 25 miles west of us and shopped. We saw 2 boxed sets of the first 3 Star Wars movies on VHS. Spider-man and hundreds of others.
On Thursday, I went to a little shop near us and bought my first laser disc. It''s a group of Disney Silly Symphonies. I see laser discs in thrifts more often and I assure you I''m going to be buying them up like mad. I checked Ebay and they''re selling for dirt cheap, so I should be able to get quite a collection.
Laser discs came into vogue in the early 80s and continued until the mid 90s. They have the appearance of CDs but are the size of a 12 inch record. The compact size of DVDs ran laser discs off of the market.
Zed Simon bought a Pioneer laser disc player at a thrift a few weeks ago that plays DVDs CDs and laser disc. The player was missing the remote but otherwise works perfectly. The original price was $1200 and Zed got it for a steal at only a few dollars
I saw the same unit in a thrift 2 weeks ago, but it was damaged.
My extra good pal Troy McClure is giving me a broken laser disc player, but I happen to know an electronics tech that can fix anything.

No, I do have the remote for my player, jog/shuttle and all. In fact, I had a friend out from PA this weekend and the LD player was one of the first things he asked to see. He was duly impressed (he even like the clinker of a movie I played - "Best Defense" with Dudley Moore and "Strategic Guest Star" Eddie Murphy).

Yeah, there are loads and loads of VHS movies out there. LaserDiscs are harder to come by, and I''ve only seen them in two stores. Amazingly, 8-tracks are still kinda prevalent. A thrift I went to yesterday had a bunch of Longines Symphonette collections on 8-track - some never opened! 8-track players are surprisingly common too. I saw 2 table stereos with 8-tracks and one console stereo with an 8-track recorder while my friend and I were out yesterday.

PS: some people think that because it''s analog, LD is better than DVD. I can''t tell yet, Good Buddy, but I sure do hope you enjoy your player once it''s fixed as much as I enjoy mine.
