I decided to jump on the bandwagon & start a seasonal thrift log, because I do most of my shopping from May to October anyway, the rest of the year can be boring.

Today I hit three church rummage sales- the results:

New in box Jack LaLanne stainless steel power juicer- $10!  I admit to watching those informercials more than once & thinking that thing looked pretty cool, normally sells for well over $100.

Belkin wireless router- $2 bucks, used hope it works OK, for 2 bucks I will take a chance.  Another computer find- a new sealed McAfee 2008 total protection disc- Free!  I read when you register a McAfee disc on your computer you can get free upgrades for a year, so I think once I load this on the computer I can upgrade it.  Good thing because my virus protection expired recently.

A package of turbo cat scratcher refill scratching pads- 25 cents.   My cat loves his turbo scratcher & I was out of refills.  I popped one in when I got home, sprinked some cat nip on & he went nuts.

Some random 25 cent items: little bag of buttons with a few rhinestone ones & an old key, 2 old books- Ruth Wakefield's Toll House Tried & True Recipes- 1940 & Random Notes of Boston, 1913 has many nice illustrations of landmarks in Boston.

After all the sales I was going to skip the thrifts but had to go to the PO which is close by, good thing cause I found these two sterling necklaces at the food bank thrift for $1 each.  One is a heavier pendant & has a topaz or some kind of light blue stone & one marcasite pendant with black onyx.

Total damage $14.75 but I have sold a few things from the past few weekends of yard saling, so I am actually in the plus column at this point.

I really don't need anymore vases, but I couldn't pass this one up for 1 dollar at the food bank thirft (maker unknown, marked "warranted 22k gold U.S.A.").  In addition to that I got a whole bunch of vintage trims rick rack, ribbon etc in yummy aqua & sea foam colors & a 50 ft roll of vintage cotton/rayon grossgrain ribbon all for 75 cents!

Went to nursing home tag sale that takes place at this particular nursing home a few x per year.  I don't find any treasures at this one but they alway have a big piles of books & puzzles that are free.  Usually several older Springbok ones but this year just one Springbok which I took- 1973 Poker Party octogonal puzzle.  Also got a few books including a Kovels Know your Collectibles reference guide, quilting book, & HC novel approved by Oprah (The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen).  The only money I spent was one dollar on this pretty needlepoint picture in a nice frame.

My favorite church sale took place this weekend, I didn't find as much as I usually do at this one, but considering there was a line of people at the door before opening with bag & boxes waiting to pounce, I did OK.  I got a box (service for 6) of vintage Johnson Bros. "Rose Chintz" dishes, fresh from the attic for 5 bucks!  I say this because the newpaper they were wrapped in smelled like an attic.

I can use these to mix & match with the pink willow stuff I got few weeks ago, also at a church sale for 5 bucks, since that set was not complete.

Also a few Relay for Life sales yielded some fun vintage stuff like a linen kitchen towel w/ strawberries, polka dot & rick rack apron (50 cents each), some good books (25 cents each), and a 26 piece doll house furniture kit (2 dollars).

The last yard sale I went to had quite a few vintage Springbok puzzles for 50 cents each, so I loaded up.

Yard sales were not particuarly exciting today, but I did manage to find a few under a dollar things at a few Relay for Life sales (one had free choc, chip cookies too- fresh baked).  Got a near mint pyrex amish butterprint cassarole dish for 50 cents, large glass & celluloid powder box for 25 cents, a set of 1903, 1904 Beatrix Potter books (covers worn but great pictures) for 50 cents and a tole tray for 50 cents.

Never made it to the thrifts today but yesterday got a large funky Kipling bag for 3 bucks!  Those are pricey bags.

Wow!  Great buys!  I love Johnson Bros Rose Chintz.  It'll look great with your other set.  Thanks for posting the pix.

Thanks, I always wanted to do a mix & match service a la Martha Stewart.  Now I have to clean out the yard sale/thrift junk from the dining room!

WOW!!! I was doing mix and match china patterns long before MS showed it on tv.  How come she gets credit for all the cool ideas that lots of folks were doing before she had a tv show?Huh?

I got my first "real" apartment in the mid-90's and started becoming interested in decorating at that time.  Martha was becoming very popular then & I subscribed to her magazine (don't anymore, but still look at it sometimes).   I guess I incorrectly attribute stuff to her because she was my first instructor of home decorating & "good things".

I sounds like MS and I had similar childhoods.  Big family, Dad not making much money, Mom knew how to stretch a buck.  I think that may be where most people learn to yard sale, ts, flea market or as the eco saying is now, reduce, re-use, re-cycle.  Been doing that all my life!

Thanks, although the yard sale season so far is not as good as last year, which was great.  I am still waiting for a real Wow item.  Maybe this weekend!

I am soooo envious over the B Potter books. They would be on display at my house in a heartbeat.
And I love that you brought home something for the cat.
My pets are the main recipients of my thrift efforts - or so I keep telling myself.  (a good excuse to keep going, it's not for ME)

I wish I could find more pet stuff at thrift/yard sales.  Pet stuff is expensive!  To get a box of scratcher refills for 25 cents was great, especially since the Walmart closest to me stopped carrying them, so I would have to order them off the Walmart website, have them sent to my local Walmart store (which isn't even that close-30 min) and pick them up there.  Pets are alot of work!
