I know there used to be a spoof roadkill recipe book-- I think it came out in the 80s or early 90s.

(Bet it's probably thriftable!)

we used to have a "roadkill" cookbook, think it was intended as a joke but had real recipes in it that were used by people who lived on roadkill......

seems like i remember a famous chef talking about the wonderful venison dishes he was able to come up with by checking the side of his country road from time to time...

i love the vintage cookbooks, and i agree about the MSG, but i think the really weird ones are the books that the old appliance manufacturers put out - recipes you can only use if you've purchased the actual appliance.... i've seen some really awful looking booklets that are now useless since my selectric-waffleblender is on the blink  Roll Eyes

OOH! i just remembered the worst vintage cookbook recipe ever - i had this book once that was one of those "sneaky mom" type of cookbooks, and she recommended mixing beef lung with the regular ground beef for meatloaf. she claimed her kids never noticed, and they absolutely rebelled whenever they had someone else's meatloaf!

yummers!

Ah!!!!! So now I understand!!!! I HAD a Sneaky Mom!! Who, while being a very good cook, also liked to occasionally slip things she KNEW Dad and I didn't like in dishes--- and then would get a bit annoyed when we'd say, "Hey, this tastes like Fill-in-the-blank-disliked-food."

But now I SEE!!!--- GenuineImitation, you have given me CONTEXT! Mom must have come from a generation of other Sneaky Moms! Moms were being INSTRUCTED by COOKBOOKS to be sneaky moms.

She couldn't help herself-- It was Mom Propaganda! I see it so clearly now!

(phew)

That probably saved me years of money on therapy right there. Smiley

Beef lung. Good gad.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!   But wait a minute! What about sibling rivalry therapy, I didn't have a pony therapy, and I was too short to make the volley ball team therapy?  Are you covered, TSR?

the worst part was, she actually had her butcher in on the propaganda campaign - after all, it was her "special" family mix, which she discreetly ordered over the phone. (you used to be able to order groceries - does anyone remember that??)

i passed the book on to a friend (no, really, she is my GOOD friend) who is always looking for ways to use offal meats. i have no idea if she has used any of the recipes, but i'm definitely on the lookout whenever she cooks for us..
