I have been collecting purses unintentionally since junior high. Early on in my collection, my grandma gave me a leather purse. She told me to handle with care and I tried. Then I found another one at a Salvation Army in Illinois, then one at the Savers down the street that was hidden in the children's clothes section. One day, my boyfriend came over with a box of stuff his mom wanted to know if I wanted and in it were two of her leather purses from high school. I cherish my collection and I use them. They have held up pretty well, but I have retired a couple to make sure they last. Here they are!

They're beautiful!  Carry them in the best of health Smiley  They look like the ones we carried in the 60s-70s.. you know, leather "hippie" bags.

I swear -- I owned the one on the far right -- only mine was white... and I had platform shoes to match.  Wooo Hooo!

Thriftily,

Those are great purses!  I have one that is similar in shape to the second one in the picture.  It has a little flower design on it and was 75 cents at a church rummage sale.  Vintage leather purses have such character.

I never pass up on a good purse, if the price is right.  No wonder they are now hanging on the wall in my dining room and on hooks in the entryway and stuffed under my bed and laying around the living room.  My, but I do love purses.

I did find an Enid Collins the other day.  It's the most I've ever spent for a purse...$15 but it was worth it.  It was just too cute.

Lovely purses!  I always feel special when I carry a leather purse...just something about the feel of leather I guess.  You've got a great collection.  Yay for you!

I actually passed over a telephone purse once at the Salvation Army with a real working telephone!  I did not realize how collectible they are!

I would love to have one of those, because I collect telephones.  I've seen them before and they are usually pretty expensive.

I found a telephone cord purse about 10 years ago at some thrift shop, and had no idea it was a collectible item. I've just held onto it because it was such an odd piece. What's weird is just yesterday, I thought about it and searched on E-Bay for one, and saw that they are rather pricey and obviously sought after. Coincidence that I just saw this post on here! Or IS it? Shocked

If I remember correctly the telephone purse I saw was priced at $15 which was a steal, now that I know how much they are worth.  I also passed over an Italian designer handbag that I think was worth some bucks, so obviously I am not a good judge of handbags.  Speaking of telephones, though, I did find a bright red donut phone once at the Salvation Army that was pretty cool.  The S.A. around the corner from my house used to have stuff like that all the time, now it is really lame (new management).  I do much better at yard sales when they are in season here.  I will have to use the thrift store guide on this site to go up into Vermont which is not too far.  They have alot of little independant thrifts there.  I hope I have better luck, I miss the treasure hunting!

Kris, nice catch with the Enid Collins. Those bags are quite collectible! Can you post a pic?

Femme1 and Jay, I have a red donut phone that picked up at the GW. It's a Genie. The pads are worn out, but I found a place where I can get the guts for $10 and have a working phone...it will be able to ring in, but won't be able to dial out (Jay, any ideas on this? Is it even worth for me to restore? I paid $2 for it. It's very cool Smiley and would look lovely with my 1977 Danish Modern "Made for Sears by MariMekko" bedspread)

Valleythrift, it must be very hard not to be able to "scratch the thrift itch". I bet you could find some neat stuff up in Vermont, though. Good luck and keep us posted!

Femme1, I LOVE your pic!

Yes, it was hard for me to grasp also, but apparently in the 70s, Marimekko designed some stuff for Sears.  Honest.

I have within my possession a Queen-size Marimekko bedspread in almost pristine condition. It's a white background with blue and red and yellow flowers. It does have a tag stating Designed by Marimekko for Sears and the date. At first glance it can be mistaken for a VERA (at least I did). When I finally get it on my bed (after I paint my bedroom) or find my camera (whichever comes first) I will post a pic for you. I am thrilled to own it, of course, because back in the day, I could not have afforded Marimekko, even from Sears.
