I recently started to collect owls. I am kind of picky about them. I see a lot of old ceramic owls in the thrift stores, but they don't really catch my eye. I try to stick to the ones that I find interesting. All of these shown I have thrifted for less than a dollar each, except the green one on the right (my first owl), which I bought at Pier 1 Imports. My favorite is the blue one toward the right.

me too... I have the stained glass one in several forms. Now that I found my camera cord, I'll try to post a few pix. I have a ton of owls... more than 200 I think.  I like the big eyed 'cute' owl but I collect them all except for paint your own ceramic owls that i see a lot of in thrift stores. I love owl cookie jars, coffee mugs, trivets, and owl lamps, night lights, clocks, etc...  A lot of the fun for me is I look a lot on ebay to get an idea of whats out there and prices and then wait to see it at thrift stores. My family loves to come running across the store with an owl and occasionally they hear me say 'Already got it'.

Wow, you've given me faith that there are more owls out there waiting to be found! 200 is amazing! I did see an owl cookie jar today, but it was priced at $7.99 and i'm too cheap for that.

I would love to see any pics, btw!

I too love owls. I agree the blue one is fantastic. I really like the mid century modern style best. I don't pick up every owl I see but my collection is growing.

I'm not an owl collector, but not long ago, I was compelled to buy a blue glass owl pitcher.  I love it because it's so quirky.  I just looked it up on ebay to see if I could find a picture and this person claims it's vaseline glass (http://tinyurl.com/n8d2wk).  I'm not convinced it is, but that would be cool.  Even cooler, if you look it up under the completed auctions, one just like this was used as a prop on the tv show Bewitched.  I will now keep it forever and ever just so I can be that much more like Samantha Stevens.

Vaseline glass is not blue but a yellowish green, here is a good link with info about vaseline glass:

http://www.orau.org/ptp/collection/consumer%20products/vaseline.htm

Funny how people will put stuff in their Ebay listings without researching it.  I saw some beautiful vaseline glass at a yard sale a few years back that I didn't buy.  It really glowed, I am very remorseful that I didn't buy it.

I don't collect owls either, but I can't resist a cute owl item.  I have an owl lantern I put out with the pumkins in the fall (50 cents thrifted) and a big terra cotta owl hanging planter that I need to find a plant for so I can put in out on the porch (2 bucks thrifted).

I came across some owls at a TS recently and had that "feeling" that they'd be a collector item to "someone." I did not get them as I wasn't sure however I think my gut was right. I'd probably sell for like $7 or so. I don't sell high unless I buy high. =D

I collect owls as well.   I try not to advertise this fact because I seem to get lots of crap full of good intentions. I am pretty selective about my pieces. Kudos on the blue bewitched pitcher!  I'm super jealous.  Happy hunting, owls are everywhere!! Wink

I found a couple more owls today. 50 cents each, 75 cents for the wind-up music one.

Cute, I  also like the musical one. My family knows i collect owls but they also know that i only collect vintage ones... That limits the gifts.

I remember the last owl frenzy. Late 60s and/or early 70s. I can't remember the names of the collectors but they were everywhere. Now I see 'collections' donated and think that grandma passed and they didn't know what to do with the owls. Lots of macrame owls too. Owl jewelry . . . Owl everything really.

I can identify with the trying to discourage people from buying me things that I collect. They seldom 'get it'. I always accept gracefully and donate or re-gift it. It's the thought that counts.

I saw a 70's 8-track carrying case today at the Sal Army with an awesome owl pattern.  It doesn't get more 70's than an 8-track case with owls!  I was kind of interested in the case because it could be used for other things, but there was no price on it & it was full of tapes I didn't want.  It was almost closing time & I didn't feel like inquiring about the price or if I had to buy the tapes (knowing that store you probably would), maybe it will be there tomorrow.  There was a second case with confederate flags on it that I can definitely live without, but the owls were very cute!
