Which Rennigers sale do you go to?  My family usually drives out to the sale they have in Kutztown, PA.

I have to say that this was pretty fun.  If anyone is up for thrifting in Northern Virginia let me know and I'll set up a similar outing for NOVA.  Manassas especially is pretty good for thrifting.

In 2000, I went to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Pottstown. We went to Kutztown to hit that flea market, it was great!

To be honest Jay and GB...I haven't been to Renningers in Mt.Dora(?) just  yet.I am having neck problems and can't do much due to horrific headaches...but am willing to make a weekend trip though with the hubby and family.
But, I think it would be very cool to go and spend the day there just to see what cool new finds we can haul home, plus meet my wonderful online thrifting friends.

I heard that there's a new kilt shop (Kilted Nation) in Manassas, right near the train station.  Never having been there, I can't rightly say, but it's supposed to be there.  They are one of the first retail outlets that sells Utilikilts.  If I ever get back there, I'll thrift.  And probably get another Utilikilt.

That is all.

Having never heard of Utilikilts I had to look it up.  How very interesting.  Do you have a traditional kilt also?  Which of the Utilikilts do you have?

Its possible.  The train station is in the downtown historic district, where there are a lot of small shops.  I generally don't venture into the historic district as there is only 1 thrift shop, and its hours are very limited.  I usually go through too late to stop in that store.

Here's a thrifting experience that happened this morning, and has ben bothering me since, so I'll vent a bit here...

Mom & I went out today to go to the secret attic in Ormond as they were having a $3 bag sale this morning.  On the way there we saw this huge sign that said "Thrift Store" and had a huge arrow pointing to the building with a nice bright OPEN sign.  I thought cool!  Someplace not in the database, I'll get the info and email it to GB.  As soon as Mom and I got in the door we were immediately assaulted with a "Can I help you?" in a what the heck are you doing here tone of voice.  Apparently this place only serves the poor, and we must have looked too rich driving up in my 10 y/o pickup truck.  I didn't mind that, but they should have been more polite about it.  They did have a sign on the main road with 2 ft tall letters saying thrift store.  There were no signs indicating it was only for the poor and/or needy.

Sorry for your experience, Jay. What exactly did she tell you, after she greeted you at the door?

That's a VERY crazy experience!  If it's for "poor" they shouldn't have that kind of signage!  I'm with SeSo!  What else did they say?

After Can I help you, I said no, we're just looking.  Then I was told that this is ...  and I am not kidding...  "The Love Center".  (I wasn't feeling the love)  Its run by a church and is to help the poor by giving them items they need free of charge.  I just commented that they should remove the sign (with the big arrow) on the main road, and promptly left.  They can't have signage like that and then have an attitude with anyone who walks in the door.  It looked like a thrit shop, had a sign that said it was a thrift shop, and the neon OPEN sign was the icing on the cake.  If you're not a thrift store then don't make it look like one.  That's my attitude.

Jay - That stinks.

Think about this:  If they're not selling anything, is it technically a store?  I agree - what do they care who comes to be helped?  Do those who receive assistance have to present documentation to accredit them with being poor enough?

They are going about this exactly the wrong way.  There are plenty of places where they (The "LOVE" center) could bring this stuff, and it would be distributed to those that are truly needy - how about a homeless shelter, a women's shelter, Teen Challenge?

Maybe it was for donations only?  If so, then why didn't they advertise it and market it as such?

Again, don't let this show of poor form reflect on any except those who executed same.

That is all.

I' m with BDA here, Jay.  I hope you will continue to thrift here in Florida, and not hold that unpleasantness against all the fabulous thrifts and staff who are out here!

But how did they know YOU weren't poor?  Were you carrying a sign that said, "I'm not poor"?   Angry

I wonder if they operate by referrals--you know, get a piece of paper from a social welfare agency and/or a church in the area, present it at the door to show it's OK.

This does not excuse rudeness. There is no excuse for that, ever.

Utilikilts - They are made in the USA of US-produced fabrics.  They are hand made in the Seattle area.

I have a Basil Colored Survival UK.  It's totally comfortable, machine washable, and creates chatter.  I have had people ask me if it was Scottish Military Issue.  They wish (The Scottish Soldiers, that is).

Anyway - there's a store in Manassas, VA which is now selling them.

SERENDIPITY - Stephen Stills and Manassas is on the CD right now.

That is all.
