I've been planning this trip to Florida for about a month now.  While down there I've arranged to spend a day thrifting with the Gurus of thrifting, Cookie, GB and I'm told possibly other members.  I can't wait to meet everyone.

Looks like we're going to be thrifting in Daytona on Tuesday if you can make it.

We're more like amateurs than gurus!  Troy McClure I think is joining us, too.

We are meeting at 10:00 a.m. when the stores open and then I'm assuming we'll break for lunch around 12:30 or 1:00.  We don't have a lunch spot picked out yet, so maybe Jay or Troy can recommend one.  GB and I have thrifted in Daytona only twice, and both places we ate lunch aren't worth a repeat visit.

My grandparents & uncle usually had pretty expensive tastes, but when I was down for grandpa's funeral my uncle took us to a nice diner.  I don't remember exactly where it was, but I'm sure I could get directions.  I think it was on the North side of Daytona, so that may be the perfect spot.  There are so many great places in Daytona.  I'll have to plot it out in my GPS and see where we'll be at 12:00-1:00.  Since my grandfather's house is just south of Daytona I usually drove north on Ridgewood Ave. (US1) then came back south on Nova Rd.  In my many years of thrifting in Daytona that seems to have always been the best plan of attack.  It minimizes backtracking.

We will.

This should be a good time and we look very forward to it.
As it stands now, Troy McClure, Cookie, Jay and myself are meeting Tuesday.
I hope SeSo can come to meet us in Daytona..

I think it would be great if we could have more organized meetings in different places around the country and just thrift 'til we drop.
Just hanging out and getting to know each other a little better.

Wow, sounds like y'all will have a wonderful time, meeting, shopping, eating.  I wish I could be there too.

Definitely need to plan a trip to FL again when I'll be down there too, in the wintertime.

Looking forward to pictures, pictures, and more pictures.

Jay, did you drive so you can take all your bargains home easily?

I always drive to Florida unless there are special circumstances.  I am not a good flier, and its just as quick to drive, if not faster.  To fly straight into Daytona from the DC area you need to fly to Atlanta then get a connecting flight to Daytona.  By the time you check your bags, clear security, wait to takeoff twice, you could have just driven there quicker.  Another time I flew into Orlando because I got a really cheap airfare, then rented a car to drive up to Daytona.  By the time I flew to Orlando, picked up the car and drove to Daytona it would have been just as quick to drive.

I also had fully loaded truck of stuff that was going to my Uncle's house, which is why I was going to Florida anyway.

Ok, I was finally able to look up my personal database of thrifts here in Daytona.  I had upgraded the maps on my GPS a few months back, and when I got here I noticed that all of my data was gone.  I was able to resolve this last night.  I found the old data file and dropped it in the directory with the new map.  All of my thrifts then lit up on the map.  That is a good thing.  That list had been compiled from word of mouth, yellow page listings, and just driving around and Look!  There's a thrift!

If time permits (Depends on how long we spend in each store) under ideal situtions I hit the couple of thrifts here in Port Orange, then head north on US1. My gps alerts me when we're within 1/2 mle of a thirft, and just stop at the thrfts on the way up to RT 40 in Ormond, then take 40 over to Nova rd and take Nova back hitting the stores on that road on the way back.  If it starts getting late then we'll take LPGA Blvd back over to Nova and return.  The only one that I consider a must see is Thrift World, which is on the north side of our trip.  That place is huge.  As far as lunch goes it is hard to predict where we're going to be so the recommendation to me was to wing it.  There are lots of great places on US1.  Sounds like we'll be able to take just 1 car, which is good because some of the places I know of only have 2 or 3 parking spaces in their lots.  I plan on taking my late Grandfather's Mercury Grand Marquis.  Should be very comfortable for a group of 4 or 5.  (Mom hasn't decided if she's going yet.)  My attitude is "When in Florida drive what the Floridians drive..."  I'll check the website's datbase and see if there's anything there that I don't know about tonight, but that is doubtful.

Later, Jay
