I live in Southern California and have a friend, Gloria, whoes grandparents live in Palm Springs. I went there with her once to visit them with high hopes of hitting some good thrift stores during the weekend.
We looked through the phone book at the library before hand. This was before a wonderful directory like these folks have made existed so we had to do it the hard way.
We arrived early Friday morning and I met Gloria''s grandparents, Jillian and Henry. We had an early lunch and then Gloria and her grandmother and I went to a couple thrift stores near her house with the idea that we''d shop the rest, or until our limit was reached, on Saturday.
The first store we went to after lunch was a Salvation Army, always a good start. I found some great pairs of gloves and 3 of my favorite pairs of shoes within 10 minutes. Next we went to a store called Revivals, they had some very nice things and Gloria got 3 great skirts.
*NOTE* Sometimes when you shop at a thrift store you find a few items obviously from the same donor in just your size, I LOVE when that happens.
Jillian volunteered at an Assistance League shop all day the next day, so we broke for dinner and socializing.
The next day we took Jillian to her shop at 9:30. We got there 15 minutes before they opened and were able to look around the shop more privately which was awesome. We bought a few things and then moved on to 5 more thrift stores before I spent my $100 limit for the weekend.
I bought 3 lamps, like I need any more lamps. I already had a 15 hanging lamps lamp collection already. (I''ve since given many away to folks that have said, "Hey, nice lamp." just to get rid of alot) I got 7 ties for my then boyfriend, now husband also, Henry.
Palm Springs is a thrift shoppers dream! There are MANY retirees that give lots amazing items to thrift shops.
I go back with Gloria and our husbands from time to time on thrift safaris, Jillian and Henry have since passed on but we always remember them fondly as we think they lived in Thrifter''s Paradise.
