...If I get time I usually hit the Salvation Army on lunch because it is close to work and shop, try on in 1 hour...

I'm a lunchtime thrifter too!  I just returned from a cool little thrift store near my office.

Cool!  I live rather far from New London and no where near the ocean.  New London has changed alot over the years but it's "anchor" is still the military base and the big ships that dock there.  Before gas was what it is today we used to go view the big ships and stop by Mystic Seaport.

Anyway, I must express my gratitude to your father for his service to our great country.

If there's anyone around,I'd love to find thrifting buddies to share good hauls and driving around looking for new thrifts gas money with. (Wow, that sounded too much like a personal ad.......sorry)

Anchorage, Ak, but have lived in Minnesota, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Maine, Michigan, & spent time in Nebraske & Montana. Have been here since 1993. Came up with my little sister & we each had a backpack, & she went back to grad school & I stayed. Now I have a houseful of stuff! My sister has lived in Madrid, Spain for over 10 years, so we're really apart, unfortunately, althought I love visitiing her there. She thrifts for clothes when she visits our brother in Lincoln, Nebraska, as Madrid doesn't really have what we think of as "thrift stores". Anybody else from Anchorage reading this?

While sleeping in this AM waiting for TS Fay to do the deed, I had a dream about ALASKA! It was totally gorgeous, and I told my husband (in the dream) to call a local real estate agent there so that we could buy a house--or at least look at prices. We also stopped in Seattle (a beautiful city) on the way to CT to see my mom.  Then the phone rang (in reality) and I had to leave my dream for a WRONG NUMBER! How dare they interrupt my dream?  But isn't that just like waking life? Something/someone TOTALLY unrelated to you and yours in any conscious way/shape/form wakes you up from your "dreams", for better or worse. No wonder the Buddhists say we are all inter-connected Undecided Undecided

However, it does increase greatly my desire to visit Alaska, so while I am waiting, waiting, waiting, for dear cousin Fay to come to town (she's never been here before, and I understand, wants to visit Cocoa Beach as she leaves the state  Roll Eyes), I will research the "North to the Future" state before I lose electricity Roll Eyes

Which is where you come in, akbjr: Any ideas/advice, about how one goes about learning about your (current) great state? Any site recommendations would be greatly and deeply appreciated!

Oh wow, your dream sounds too cool, it's funny how those things work. Well, I hardly know where to start. For the skinny on real life & our lovely politics, read the Anchorage Daily News online. Of course I haven't really read much online, which is bad, I don't know what is available, except there's so much, each town would have it's own website, Anchorage is kind of the "hub", as people from most other places come through here on their way in or out of the state. Also, the big box stores do what they call "bush orders" which is sending out orders to the little towns & villages where expenses are high. We don't have "counties" here, we have "bouroughs", like the Anchorage bourough, etc. We have state troopers & each city or town has it's own police system. We don't have "sheriff's".
Anchorage & "Southeast", the part that parrallels Canada have the most moderate temperatures.
And yes, Alaska has the PFD where they share money with each resident each fall. The amount is based on the previous 5 years of earnings of the permanent fund, so it's called the permanent fund dividend. It's suppossed to be over $2,000 this year, it's supposed to help the the general overall high prices of living here, although Anchorage itself is the cheapest place to live in the state, & as they say, Anchorage is only a half hour from Alaska....Our governor, Sara Palin was in Vogue magazine last spring, she is very popular although lately there's been some stuff going on... Politics is the same everywhere. She just had her 5th child, she was 44, I think & he was born with down syndrome & she & the mister have such a great attitide about children being blessings no matter what. I could keep going but this maybe isn't for everyone, email me again & I'll write to you again.

North West suburbs, Illinois now, originally from London quite a few years ago and I have to say I hope you all appreciate how lucky you are with so many great thrift shops to choose from here, I thrifted in UK and it was okay but not a patch on how good it is here, and garage sales are just to die for here, I cant wait for fridays so I can drive round some fun places to see whats out there, alas no pyrex fridge containers but I know I will find one one day..........now if I could only find the red and green pyrex mixing bowls to match the yellow and blue ones I found in goodwill recently.  Dont tell me to go to ebay........thats for five years time if I havent found them by then, do any of you believe in thrifting haiku?  I found a fab old pyrex casserole yesturday in twice blessed and it had the metal stand and lid and is lovely, dunno what the going rate is really so I didnt think 8 bucks was bad.  I do actually use the pyrex I am buying in thrifts.
happy thrifting........

Hi...I'm from Pembroke, Mass (South Shore of Boston).  I'm heading out today to a brand new Salvation Army in Wareham -- Grand Opening!!!!  I'll be adding the info to the list once I get the hours.  I have lots of thrifting buddies.  Three of us are going today, but I have all my friends into thrifting now.   One of my friends and I have gone throughout Massachusetts on what we call our "Goodwill Tour" -- but not limited to Goodwill.  I program my GPS and off we go.  Doesn't get much more fun that that!!!

A new Savers just opened up on the North Shore in Peabody.  My sister went to the grand opening but thought it was a little expensive.
