Hello all! I'm anastasiabeaverhausen's best friend, and since I can't spell and that name is to darn long, from here on out if I talk about sis I'm talking about her. I've been a thrift shopper as long as I can remember. As a kid I would go around the neighborhood to yard sales and buy stuff to take back to my fort in the woods. Great stuff like green bowls, pitchers you know all that plastic stuff they give you when you leave the hospital. Hey I was a kid and it went great in my fort what can I say LOL. Besides my mom MS. THE BEST OF EVERYTHING would never have dreamed of letting me bring it in her house. ROFL
Anyway, now my tastes have changed I missed my calling and was born late I should have been a hippie so now I go for all the groovy 70's stuff. To bad these young kids have figured out it's cool. HAHA
Sis says when I get my new place she can't visit long all the psychedelic colors will give her a headache. Guess my quest on our next outting should be some hippie sun glasses so she can visit without pain. : )
Anyway I look forward to chatting with y'all and viewing your groovy finds. Have a marvelous day.

Hi, I liked your mention of your "fort in the woods". My brother & I had a treefort, plus various & sundry other "forts" in some woods behind our house growing up. I used to dream of a "kitchen" but the guys I played with wouldn't have put up with that. I think forts are essential for a healthy childhood, feel for kids who don't live in places conducive to them.
This is a way cool site, you'll like it, welcome!

Welcome to the list.  I didn't have a fort in the woods.  Heck, I didn't even have woods.  We would make forts in the basement or in the attic, or in the lofts in the garage.

You'll find lots of "groovy" folks here, but not all of them were or are hippies.  We all have our own aesthetic, yet we all get along - I wonder why...

I have to ask whether you have gotten into the music of the 70's in the way it was intended - ON VINYL.

We have Zed Simon and DJ Eddie B, as well as a bunch of others who can steer you to all the best stuff and the best equipment.

So break out those black velvet psychedelic posters and get busy kitten.

Hi, after signing on as a guest forever thought I ought to join as I feel like I read this site waaay too much.  I love thrift shopping, its too much fun, have gotten into pyrex after reading a lot of your comments over the months........ but I just like old stuff basically, no interest in ebay, thats too easy to acquire the bits you love, thrift stores, garage sales, church rummage sales etc etc......its a way of life once you realize how much fun you can have, and you stay solvent(hopefully) and with the current focus on environmental issues you can feel good about the recycling aspect, but you all know that allready, you have been ahead of the curve for years.
I have to say usually thrift shoppers are nice likeminded people but there seems to be an element of bullies creeping in? or is that just my local goodwill.  They hover round the double doors for the new stuff coming out and you feel you wouldnt dare pick something up until the hardcore shoppers have decided if its worthy of their attention.  I prefer the charity thrifts near me more nowadays, alas more people know our secret about how good thrifting can be.
anyway thats all for now, happy thrifting people, love to hear about all your excellent finds and thoughts on this subject.

Sooty, welcome to the site.

I think your observations are on the mark. But in Central FL, this has been happening for years and years. If a garage sale starts at 7 AM, you can guarentee the dealers and pickers will be there at 6 AM...if it starts at 6, they are there at 5, and if it starts at 5, they swing by the sale the night before on another pretext ("O, I didn't see if you had "such and such" in your ad, and thought I'd drop by on the way home from work...") They pick the bones to ashes, and then they pick the ashes, if you get my drift.  This is a poorer community anyway, and most of the stuff that hits is crap, though if you are diligent, patient, and have a good eye, you may still hit it lucky once in a while.

I follow blogs of a few other thrifters out there in much richer communities (like Cali, Seattle area, etc.) and they are just starting to feeling the pain, citing "a lot of made in China stuff that is over-priced, etc." I say, save your pennies and buy only the best you can afford.

Occassionally I buy something on Ebay to complete or add to a collection, but I always feel like it's "cheating".  Much better to find at a thrift or yard sale.

Yard sales have become MUCH more competitive this year for some reason.  Lots of nasty people.  Luckily most of the sales around here don't start until the advertised time so early birds are out of luck.  Probably more competition at thrifts too, but they don't all show up at the same time, so its hard to tell, luckily our thrifts don't let people handg out by the dock or donation sorting room.
