I love to poke and prod among all the stuff in a thrift store looking for that one item or two or three-etc etc that I must buy!  I developed my thrift store addiction at an early age going to rummage sales with my mom.  She and I still go to church rummage sales located in her city (she is in her late 70's and does not like to go far).  I, on the other hand will drive through many cities to go to various thrift stores.  I am glad I found this site it should be very interesting!!!

welcome fellow californian!

our favorite thrift store in LA is on fairfax - can't remember the name, but i believe it is an AIDS benefit store. seems like it was painted purple... my daughter got these outrageous rust colored suede boots there. they have a big peek-a-boo hole cut into them on the ankle - they look sooooo hip! we found so much fun stuff in that store. it's definitely on our hit list the next time we head that way.

About two blocks north of that Out of Closet is a Jewish Federation Council location.

About a mile or two south on Fairfax is another Jewish Federation Council thrift store.

There is also a Goodwill nearby --- on La Brea just south of Wilshire Blvd.

Depends on what you are looking for   Wink

Out of Closet is great for funky clothes & decor & records--- & really bad at non-collectible children's toys & kids clothes

JFC  are more expensive but the books can be good

GW has better selection for costume jewelry & utilitarian items.

Oh, just on an aside --- I know a someone who used to work for the Out of Closet / AIDs Foundation.

A lot of Hollywood types donated mass amounts of stuff to the thrift when AIDs was the hot topic in the industry.   The donations have slowed now.

I am wondering what are those Hollywood types doing with their used goods now.

Just wondering because the thrifts around here, in the middle of nowhere, have been complaining about big drop in donations.  I was thinking, well times ar hard and maybe people are trying to sell good stuff or hold onto things longer. But that certainly wouldn't be the case for celebrities.

that's interesting because yes, times are hard, and yesterday we pared down dramatically around our house. only now instead of giving everything to my thrift store, i'm doing more distribution - some is going to the library book sale (rather than the thrift) to benefit my local library. some is going to freecycle (so that others may benefit freely) and some is going to the thrift - but only the clothes and small housewares. i guess i'm saying that i AM getting pickier about where my things are going, because i'd like to see them get in the supply chain the quickest most direct way. i've even got some homeschooling stuff i'm going to put on freecycle, because even though my thrift charity would benefit from it's sale, i'd like it to go to someone who could directly benefit from it's use right away. so, at this point, the exchange of money for goods is not my main objective.
btw, we live in the boonies too, and i am shocked at how much is on our own local (small) freecycle site! everyone should be using this .org!

I had gone to an Out of the Closet store in Canoga Park and found some interesting stuff, but high prices as well.  I don't think I ever bought anything there.

FWIW

See you next time
Bye for now
