Hi, my name is DJ Phonoboy from Switzerland. Always looking for a new forum to register! I'm a "thrifter" in Switzerland, looking always for "cheap" records. Hope everybody can help me to get a list for my upcoming trip to the US in june.

Hey Phonoboy -

Welcome to the wonderful world of thrifting for LPs.  There are a ton of them out there is the USA, but it seems like they're all by Jim Nabors or Herb Alpert, or some sort of obscure family gospel quintet.

If you have questions about thrifting in the US in general, you've DEFINITELY come to the right place.

See you next time
bye for now

The thrifts usually have quite a few records, but as big daddy said, finding a gem is not easy.  You should look in the newspaper in the places you visit for estate sales, auctions, or even yard sales, you might have better luck.

You could also look for used record stores in hat ever area you will be visiting.  We have acouple  in our area.  Since LPs are obsolete, they usually sell for just a buck or two.  The record stores usually have a better selection that thrift shops/yard sales/flea markets.  Those usually have the leftovers of someone selling off Granny's estate.  Record stores will often offer a trade in so you can get a better selection.  My husband and I have 100s of LPs we haven't been able to play in ages.  Our turntable gave out years ago and we haven't been able to find a replacement.  Too bad, we have some great stuff.

There are quite a few turntables (new ones) currently on the market - the manufacturers have also gotten with it - they're coming with built-in pre-amps so you can connect a turntable directly to an "AUX" input on a modern stereo, without the need of a "PHONO" setting on the input selector.  There are some which also come with USB cables so that you can play the disks through your computer, as well as creating digital files of your best stuff.

See you next time

Wow, I wish I spoke electronese.  I have not one clue what you said. It sounded promising.  I will pass on your message to my son, who is an electrical engineer.  He will know. Thanks for the info.

After all this record talk, I stopped to look at the records at the SA today.  Most of the time when I pass by them I see Polka records (lots of Polish people in this area), classic rock I am not interested in, Christmas albums from the typical crooners, etc.  I found a few nice ones mixed in with the usual though.  1. Kraftwerks Musique Non Stop 12 inch single (I am sure most DJ's would have that one) and 2. Madonna 12" Maxi Single with extended mixes of Borderline & Lucky Star.  I went through a Madonna wannabe phase in H.S. so I had to get that one.

Now I just need a record player to play those & all the great records I got from my Mom.  Someday I'll find one!

Your picture is not showing up, on my computer at least, but I can tell you it is not any of the rare pressings (too bad!), but the warner bros 1986 pressing.  I was looking on Ebay & saw that if my madonna 12" single had been made in Portugal instead of US it would be alot more valuable, even though it is the same exact cover/recordings- weird!

yeah import pressings tend to go for more...

it's funny, being a fan of The Smiths, i used to collect a good bit of their music, when morrissey put out his first solo album, the Japanese import cost three times as much and had ONE LESS song on it... yikes!!

I liked the Smiths alot in HS, I saw what I think was one of their last US shows.  I was never interested in Morrissey's solo career though.  I wish I still had all of my old albums - I accidentally left them behind at an old apartment.  Some probably worth $ now.

yes and no... it seems to go in waves... during my high school era (90-94) some smiths 12" singles would fetch anywhere from 20-80 bucks... now it seems as though you can pick up some of those singles for 5-10 bucks...

i've got a few smiths albums, i LOVED their album art... just shots of people... i'll try to post some of their singles covers if i get a chance...

I meant my 80's alternative albums in general, I didn't have a ton but maybe there were a few gems.  Meat is Murder & Queen is Dead are my fav for Smiths, their albums do make great pop art pieces.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was at the SA & I heard Echo & the Bunnymen Killing Moon on the new satalite radio system they got there recently.  I forgot what a great album that was & then I just read that they are performing that album at Radio City Music Hall, I think, in Oct.  Wonder if Ian still sounds good, maybe I'll check it out.  A weird coincidence since I haven't thought about them for a long time!
