Watching 2 Broke girls, and they spent a whole scene in a Goodwill store.

Checked it out - about the only thing it has in common with our Goodwills is the name, but I give them points for trying.

Yeah, there seemed to be a lot more cool stuff there than any time I go to Goodwill, even the layout of the store didn't look like a Goodwill.  I thought "The rules of the 'Will" were pretty funny though.

The Goodwills in the Phoenix area are HUGE compared to the one shown on the TV Show.  The space shown on 2 Broke Girls wouldn't even cover the cash register areas in most of the Goodwills here.

And the stuff.

Everything you pick up is NOT going to be couture (I can count on the fingers of one hand how often this has happened to me - I have a Norma Kamali shirt, but she did a line for WalMart, so big deal) .  Everything you pick up is not going to be a PHENOMENAL BARGAIN.  The blenders are not ALL going to be 1950's vintage Osterizers; the telephones are not ALL going to be 1960's vintage pink Princess phones in perfect working order; The stereos are not ALL going to be McIntosh.  The records are not all going to be mint and/or unopened; the NES decks are not ALL going to be complete; and the bikes are not ALL going to be un-ridden Schwinn Krates from 1971.

Arguments are MORE RARE (at least in the Phoenix area stores) than all the things mentioned above.

I thought it was a complete put-on, doing a massive disservice to thrift shoppers world-wide.

I had to say this.

"Thrifting" is NOT like shooting fish in a barrel.  It takes knowledge, dedication, timing, luck, and perseverance.

I love 2 Broke Girls. Kat Dennings is great. I haven't like a show on television in awhile that actually made me laugh. It's a sitcom, so I don't expect it to be realistic. Take it for what it is & have a laugh - at least it's not some Paris Hilton shopping on Rodeo Drive on some reality show.

Why do you think it's such a massive disservice to thrift shoppers?

Well said!

I saw the segment and I couldn't believe that Goodwill Industries allowed them to use their name! The talk of shopping at Goodwill not being "real shopping" was odd and then they insinuate that Goodwill has a smell that the shoppers emit after shopping there.
The talk of finding drugs in the pockets of a thrifted item and then taking it was asinine as well.
"Lots of people cry in Goodwill."
"Shoe her down"? WOW! I can't even believe that got past the sensors.

As pretty much always, BDA is correct. A huge disservice was done for thrifters and Goodwills.

I can see your point of view - it is a sitcom, and it in no way really reflects reality.  I haven't seen an entire episode, but I kind of get the drift of what was going on.  I don't like Paris Hilton any more than I like having MRI's (and I HATE THEM) Angry

That being said, I thought it did a disservice to thrifters world wide (I stand by my original statement).  We are a skilled lot.  We know certain "lines" of stuff backwards, frontwards, inside and outside and upside-down.  Each of us has an area in which we could be considered borderline expert.  FrenchGirl knows vintage (mid-century postwar) clothing and stuff, Jay knows Pyrex, Syphic knows game decks, Cookie knows Wilton.  The list goes on and on.

The situation on "2 Broke Girls" didn't seem to reflect that at all.  We're all just a bunch of smelly rabble, too cheap to participate in main stream consumerism at it's boring best.

Sorry, but we're better than that.

I am usually not a fan of sit coms but confess a liking for the Big Bang Theory.  Really funny but then I am a geek and get all the jokes.

I also like Big Bang Theory.  I think there is a lot of good material there, but I don't think they need to rely on sex jokes as much as they do.  I think the writers (on that show) are smarter than that.
