One of my favorite movies that has thrift shops in it has got to be Pretty In Pink.  Molly Ringwald''s character dressed almost entirely in eclectic thrift store finds that she often adapted and sewed into entirely new creations that were cute.  Alas, that cannot be said for the prom dress she created from her friend''s 1950''s prom dress and the thrift prom dress her dad gets her.   But the movie is still great on so many levels including the thrift store creativity.

P.S.  I will love Ducky forever!

You can''t look at this picture and not have OMD''s "If You Leave" running through your head.

I remember the scene where the popular girls make fun of her for shopping at the "Five & Dime" (or some comment like that).

I liked that Andie (Molly Ringwald's character) had her own style of dressing and didn't care what the snobs thought of her...and the revamped prom dress was cute.

Welcome to the board!  And yes, I loved that Andie had so much more class and style and creativity than those brats she went to school with. And character, too. Lots of it.  I say the Duckman Rules!!!

I watched this with my 14 year old daughter last night.  She freasked that Andie went home with Blaine and not Ducky.  I had to explain to her that the turning point of the movie was when Ducky gave her permission to go get her Blaine.  If Andie and Ducky left together, then nothing would have been accomplished.

Teen minds don't see the cinematic big picture sometimes.

I do laugh at what is in her bedroom - the family apparently doesn't have two nickels to rub together, but she has a pink princess phone.  Yeah, okay.  She got that at a thrift for a quarter, right?

That is all.

Yeah, right about the Princess bedroom.  I rationalized that in three ways:

1.  A lot of that stuff might have been her mom's, as her mom did leave the family and probably left all her personal stuff behind, which would have been from 60s-70s; and

2. This was the 80s when thrifting and funkiness (at least in my humble experience) were the provence of either rich kids who wanted to be creative/funky; truly broke people, antique dealers of the future, or a combination of all three. Therefore, a lot of the stuff she had was probably gotten for a song. Since Andie was a poor artist literally from the "wrong side of the tracks", she was creative and thrifty.

3.  What about her friend/boss, the Annie Potts character, who was so totally funky, and gave Andie the original prom dress and owned the vintage record store?  What a mentor!! A lot of Andie's stuff might have come from her...

I often wonder if Hollywood has thought of doing a "Pretty in Pink" sequel; you know: "Pretty in Pink:  Where are They Now?" or "Pretty in Pink: 25 Years Later"  I have a LOT of great ideas for how those characters ended up, Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Yes, the Duckman was a Prince amongst princes.  He showed true love, agape. Sometimes when we are younger (and even not so young) this is hard to see, to understand.

So neat to find folk who like that movie!!!!

when i was in high school (in the early 90's), i had a friend named Kevin.  Everyone called him Duckie.  He, like the others in our group, was a character.  i hung out with the weirdos- the artsy fartsy people, drama people, artists, and debate clan.  my kind of people.  basically, the people who knew what was going on in the world, and didn't care about brand name clothes and who was going out with who, and all that shallow high school stuff.  i like to think that we had the most fun back in those days because we were not shallow, did not make fun of other people, and made the best of high school.   sound familiar?
Duckie was known for wearing long pajama gowns over his jeans, and a long trench coat in which he kept a stuffed duck in the pocket.  (i said he was a character) i, on the other hand wore a pair of Doc Marten combat boots nearly every day. Man, i wish i still had those things.  I even had a pair of purple crushed velvet ones.  those things were sassy.
my other male friend, garland, wore a kilt to school just to see if he would get in trouble.  male students are not allowed to wear skirts.  he did get in trouble and had to go home to change even after using the clever argument that a kilt is a traditional male Scottish outfit.  funny guy.
by the way, Pretty in Pink is one of my fave 80's movies.  i was actually in love with Duckie.  i also am in love with her pink Kharman Ghia.  beautiful stuff.

LOL.  I sell pink princess phones for $125, and I can't keep them in stock!  I remember a movie I saw a while ago (Don't remember the title) where this guy was supposed to be poor, but had a princess phone, venetian glass lamps from the 60's (Those go for about $600/pr) and other cool stuff.  The only way you could tell he was supposed to be poor is the fact that the wallpaper was peeling off the walls.  Everything in the house was very valuable.

I forgot about the Ghia.  Jeez, any other "fringe" cliches we can think of?  Mondrian Posters?  Got 'em.

Funny thing - In Sixteen Candles, she also has a "boy's" name (Sam) and also has a princess phone - this time in white.

No wonder she got out of the motion picture business and escaped to France.

That is all.

All joking aside, I have a box full of Princess phones I picked up at thrift stores -- probably 5 or 6 in total. None pink, unfortunately, but all were less than $2. They've been sitting in my storage for the past year, which I just unloaded this weekend with the intent of eBay'ing all the stuff I don't need to use on a regular basis.

I haven't seen that movie in years, or even decades!  All this talking about it has made me want to go rent it.  But maybe I'll find it at a thrift store even cheaper than renting.

We have Netflix but thinking about getting Blockbuster.  In theory dropping off the movies at the store and getting more either at the store or online sounds good.  How are you enjoying Blockbuster, are you happy with them?

I am nuts about BlockBuster Online.  It's so convenient and easy.  And, now with the ability to drop off a movie you received in the mail at the BB store and get a new movie while you're there...it's awesome.  I've never had a problem besides the occasional 'que scrambling' where all my movies get re-arranged...oh and the one time I was mailed an 'adult feature' instead of Spiderman 2  lol

I loved this movie!  I especially liked Annie Potts' character (can't remember the name).  The beehive hairdo she wore at the end of the movie was fantastic!  I often wonder if the now defunct designer clothing line, Imitation of Christ, took their cues from Pretty in Pink.  They would redesign thrift store clothing and then sell it for outrageous sums of money.
