Last night, I rewatched an old favorite movie:  Pecker.  It's been awhile since I watched this film and I had forgotten that Pecker's mother owned a thrift store!

This movie is definitely worth rewatching if you haven't seen it for awhile.  If you've--gasp!--never seen it, you should take a look.  John Waters fans might argue with me, but I think Pecker is his finest work.

How did I miss Pecker? I love John Waters. Heck, I even met him at a Q&A in the late 80's when I was an impressionable broadcasting major. I guess I'll have to see if DH can download it from somewhere for me.

I have Pecker on VHS - thrifted it from a Goodwill.  It's a good flick, but it's not Waters's best.  I think his "best" would have to feature Divine, and I think his best, most cohesive work is Hairspray.

Anyway, not to start a fight, but there it is.

See... I said John Waters fans would argue with me!  Hairspray is in my friend Joe's top ten all time great movies lists.  He and I have the Hairspray vs. Pecker argument all the time.

I just love the characters in Pecker. I especially love the grandmother who thinks the Virgin Mary Statue is talking to her.  The sugar addicted Little Chrissy is also a hoot, as is Martha Plimpton as the hostess at the gay bar.

Pecker is an enjoyable flick (for what it is), but it's not on par with Hairspray.  The story in Hairspray makes more sense, the characters are more fleshed out, and the actors are better cast.  Pecker is a little depressing with the house getting broken into and looted, and the characters were just not as endearing.  The list of looneys in Hairspray is wonderful; most of the characters in Pecker are mainly pathetic (as in they inspire pathos).

I think the lack of Divine in Pecker drops it to a second-tier John Waters movie.

Pecker is to John Waters as Willow is to George Lucas (as in, he lost his touch on this one and it shows).
