It was a very nice day off, even if it did start a few hours later than I'd planned.
First stop was the newly-discovered St. Vincent DePaul thrift. Ever wonder what happened to all the furniture on The Price Is Right that nobody won 20 years ago? Apparently, it's all here! I'll have to take pix next time with my new, much-more conspicuous camera, but I swear it was like walking back into 1986. Grey leather sectionals, zwoovy wall units, geometric wall art in grey, pink and blue...I loved it. They had a lot of sectionals - at least a half-a-dozen, including that leather one. Futons, cribs, bedroom sets and new furniture were also pretty popular. A fellow record collector I met at the Goodwill down the street a couple weeks ago stopped by to check out the record stash and came away with some decent finds. I did too, but I have to say, I've never seen a thrift store record section with so many empty jackets as this one had. Unlike just about every other major thrift I've seen, this one had no electronic stuff. Shame! I've got enough anyway. I check out, and I'm more convinced than ever that Long Islanders are the nicest people on the planet. I got a very nice "Welcome to St. Vinnie's" from one lady, while the other one introduced me to a regular customer. You just don't get that in Pennsylvania - 'least not where I shop when I'm out there.
After that great experience, I stopped off to an old standby that's part of a chain of at least 4 stores. Nothing spectacular there, except maybe a couple of outlandish prices. I got the last of their LaserDiscs a couple weeks ago: Star Trek (the original) and The Abyss (pan-n-scan expanded version). This chain is almost always good for a LaserDisc or two in their various stores. What else is nice, the colored-tag discounts apply to everything - not just clothes.
Then it was off to
Rita's for sut'm new: pistachio cream ice. No actual nuts detected, but I like it. Must try a blueberry cobbler Blendito next time. Conveniently, there's a mall right across from this Rita's, so I spent some time there and picked up iWork for my MacBook, which I'm not spending nearly enough time with.
To cap off the trip, a visit to a place that barely exists anymore: Roy Rogers. If you're in the northeast, make it a point to get to one. I recommend the Double R Bar burger - a true HAMburger that's got cheese and a couple thin slices of ham on top.
I'll get to a couple of other thrifty spots on the Island soon.
