Has anyone else found anything interesting in books that they either have purchased or looked through?
I've found several old postcards. Of course I just put them in other books so I'll never be able to post pics of them. They are lost in our too many book personal library.
They are both from the 1930's actually. One is addressed to a lady in a city and state. No street address or zip code. It's a wonder that mail ever got to anyone back then.
I've also found many newspaper articles usually relevant to the book.
Cookbooks seem to have the most hidden treasures. I've found recipes galore and some really beautiful full color orange juice ads from a book that was printed in 1937. Of course I have no idea where any of the items are, sorry..

Anyone find anything reeeeealy good, like ca$h, or even just neeto?

GB

P.S. Sorry the forum was down yesterday, I try my best.....

Oh! I have found some goodies, it's one of my favorite surprises! Like you, I have found recipes, obituaries, and postcards, but I have also found old photos, including a newer one of a guy flipping off the camera, which was kind of funny. I find old newspaper articles and little notes, one of my favorites was the notes someone left inside that were written on slips from a pad of paper the local phone company gave out that where multicolored and had promotional messages printed on the bottom about how you could get phones in those colors. Cheesy Fun stuff!

That's some really nice stuff you've found in books.  I've found a couple of nice bookmarks, plane ticket stubs, shopping list, just stuff like that.  My friend did find money in a bunch of books, something like 5 dollars in each book and she'd only bought 4 so she made a little bit.  I've bought a few books that the previous owner marked every misspelled word or grammatical error.

I'd hate to be that person's child. Man that would be brutal!

I've found lots of old newspaper clippings, including this tiny one-line snippet:  "In a little town even your enemies come to your funeral."  Based on the font of the little bit of advertisement I can make out on the back, I figure it's from the 'teens or 'twenties.  I'm saving it to use in a collage someday.

I once found a stamp from England from 1903? 1913? -- can't remember! -- but I put it back in the book. Smiley

I have found recipes and a few clippings from newspapers, but usually I find blank Post-it notes. Cheesy

pop-pirate, I love your story of finding a cookbook in Danish that you purchased because it had dried flowers in it.   It's sweet and romantic and mysterious--what an experience for **you**.

I'd keep it on my coffee table so guests could look and wonder...and then tell them exactly why I purchased it...'cause it was in Danish and had the dried flowers in it, evoking an unnamable emotion at the moment, and every time I look at the book. What moment you must have, like journeys to unknown countries.

I've never found anything of note between the pages of a book, but I did find a very tightly hand-rolled 'cigarette of questionable origin' inside a Journey album cover once.

I collect cookbooks(875 and counting!), so I've found all kinds of interesting things from a Valentine from the 1930s to extra handwritten recipes to personal letters. I refer to anything extra as 'prize inside' -- cereal boxes may not have them any more, but the second-hand books do! I've been known to buy a cookbook I already have if it comes with a prize inside and the price is right.

The strangest thing I've ever found was inside a vintage knitting booklet. The previous owner had stashed a bunch of letters and clippings related to a Chicago pension scandal in the 1970s inside of it. I'm used to finding newspaper clippings and handwritten patters, but legal documents? That was a new one.

I recycled it properly, of course ;-)  Best album I ever bought.
