I don't mind that so much. I do find myself identifying the Fair Weather thrifters pretty easily, however-- the college students that only visit the thrifts when they needs costumes. :-)

I always wish I could make them see that they can find GOOD things in the thrifts, too, and not just funny stuff. "Look, dudes! Cool vinyl! Cheap furniture! Plates, so you don't have to keep eating over the sink!" :-)

Like wow man! Thrift shopping is cool!

The college Halloween crowd, or the going to a Halloween party crowd. I live next to the latter, he only goes to thrifts for costumes.

Yeah, but if you eat over the sink you don't have to do dishes...  Wink

I guess more generally it's the Golng to a Halloween Party crowd. The last group looked like linebackers for one of the local colleges. Needless to say, I did NOT go up to them with my, "Dudes, you can find good stuff here year round" speech lest I be crushed.

We're in the "dry" thrift season here. BUt today I found this great cross for a buck and change

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330164031284&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=014

This is exactly like the one I found, except mine does NOT say "Rev. Ewing" on it.  But it has that great "old-time religion appeal."  I liked it so much that I went back and got it after I had left the store, a few hours later.

The reason I posted this in this link is that I am thinking of being Aimee Semple McPherson for Halloween...I am getting real Aimee vibes from this cross.  I think she must have been a fantastic preacher and one gutsy lady.  If you don't know who Aimee is and would like to, you can check out these links:

SeSo, this might be a bit OT, but I just listened to a podcast on Aimee Semple MacPherson that was pretty fascinating:

http://speakingoffaith.publicradio.org/programs/sisteraimee/index.shtml

The podcast is free and you can download it through iTunes.  You're right, she was quite a character!

Back to Halloween:  my local Savers has a ton of new costumes and props, which is handy for my daughter's costume needs, but clogs up the store with junk I'm not interested in - bah humbug!

And with the amateur thrifters, though I feel at times like I'm being pitied by them for sifting through the racks, occasionally I've seen conversions, where one person will say, "hey, check out this brand-new X!  For five bucks!" and that makes me happy.

Thanks for the info, Secondhand Nation! Very cool, indeed.

If I do the Aimee thing for Halloween, it will all be thrifted Aimee, not just my costume, but my decor, as well. You know, for that true "old-time religion" ambience.I live in the "buckle" of the bible-belt, so my thrift adventures should be interesting , if I do pursue this costume. I will keep posting my thrifted journeys here; my Halloween thrift evolution.  I appreciate your enthusiasm.

As for amateur thrifters...well, everybody's got to have a conversion sometime Smiley Smiley

Not that's for Halloween, but I'll try to tie this one in:

Yesterday, while at the Goodwill on Cave Creek and Cactus, I scored a Star Wars "blaster" (like a ray gun, but much more detailed, with really great sound effects) which appears to have come from some sort of laser tag game.  A lot of the teenagers I hang out with tend to dress up as Star Wars characters (some Jedi, some Sith) for Halloween.  I think I shall not (too much trouble - I think this year I'm going as Harvey Pekar - See American Splendor for the reference) but I shall be equipped with a blaster, which will make for some interesting exchanges.

I also scored some cassettes - Mott The Hoople, Pink Floyd, The Who, John Coltrane.  The Coltrane cassette, even after being packed and re-packed, was still sounding terrible, so that was a loss, but All The Young Dudes by Mott The Hoople is a great album, for those who may have forgotten... Wink

That is all

Your choice of Halloween (Harvey Pekar) is very cool! Should be easy???

All the Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople...now, I'm having a flashback to 1974  Grin

After all (and I'm paraphrasing here--it's been a long time) "Why do I need TV when I've got T-Rex?"

I've given up ever finding any Coltrane anywhere. Sorry about your cassette.  I've been looking for an LP of Alice's "Journey to Satchidananda" for ten years. Finally, just this week, I broke down and bought the freakin' CD.  It's miraculous stuff, I can tell you that.
