In Tennessee we don't pay tax on clothes bought at GW.

Folks
Before you go around the bend on this topic. think about this. All these org's  like Goodwill, Salvation Army , your local Hospice have legions of accountants and attorneys'. Don't you think if we didn't have to chage sale tax they would know.
I know I get tired of this debate in my store. It's a retail establishment almost like any other.The state still wants it's share of your take. Now if some places are not charging tax, ask them why not. but if they are charging tax , THERE will be a resale certificate at their register someone. It has to be posted.

Each state has different rules about churches paying sales tax. Some don't have to and so they don't charge tax.
It's how the thrift store is set up, if it's actually part of the church, then they might not have to pay sales tax. If the store is operated under a different corporate umbrella, then they might be required to pay sales tax.

It's not as cut and dry as you're stating.
