Millie gets a thrifted bowl.

« on: December 06, 2007, 09:16:13 AM »

Yesterday, while on my lunch break, I picked up a queen size quilt, 2 shams, complete sheet set with extra pair of pillow cases AND another full flat sheet (I'm thinking it'll make great valances!), all matching, all in like new condition for, drum roll please, $19. It gets better. They are Ralph Lauren. There wasn't a bed skirt, but I'll be watching for it to appear. If it doesn't, no big deal, can use one in complimentary color.  There is nothing like finding a good deal to 'make' a whole week!!!

"There wasn't a bed skirt..."

HAHAHA... That's a good one.

And wow, did you score on that one, bedskirt or no! Ralph is not cheap, and has some really classic and tasteful designs. Very nice!

Wow, what a great find.  I hope you find the matching bedskirt too.

I have a feeling if you can get back to that store in a week or two, that bedskirt will be there.

Like I got some great crystal plates from the Depression era a week back-- then this week, I got the matching cake plate.

Let us know how it goes! :-)

I am ashamed to say that I have a three dollar thrifted sheet rule.  And actually, if a sheet is more than two bucks -- no matter what -- I pass on it!  They do have to be 100% cotton.  I've gotten some great Lauren sheets for .99 cents.  My pillow case rule is to not spend more than a buck for two.

I am a really serious bargain hunter and have scored a lot of new sheets sets for under twenty bucks at outlet and discount stores.  I guess that is why I am very particular for what I pay at a thrift.  Also... I don't care if my linens match or not.  However, I did find a very nice set of Laura Ashley sheets -- 100% cotton, with cases, top and bottom sheets, for $3.99.  These were not new -- but with 100% cotton, washing makes them softer (however, if they are lower thread count jersey/t-shirt material, that wears them out and makes them pill -- so take a pass on those!).  I did have to re-sew a few seams on that Laura Ashley set -- but that is actually something I do with almost all thrifted sheet sets I buy -- I run a row of machine stitching around all pillow case edges and at the fitted corners of the bottom sheet.  That way, I know they'll be stronger from the start.

That sheet set sounds exciting -- alas, with my very limited budget... $19.00 is way out of my price range!

Thriftily (and terminally cheap),
Alexandra

I'd never pay $19 for just sheets! Everything that I got, all together, was $19. I've checked around and the dust ruffle is close to $70 new all by itself. Needless to say, I won't be buying one unless it shows up at the ts!! I'm with you, for ts sheets they have to be just a couple of bucks max.

Way to go! Cheesy

I live in an area where there used to be loads of textile mills. (Cannon Mills was the big one.) I have found brand new, still in the package sheet sets for $2.00! Shocked

I thrifted the most bizarre-looking, vintage, children's sheet set for one of my girls. It was soooo weird that I had to have it! Cheesy It's jolly and colorful and just right for a toddler. Smiley

Superiorgirl I am ~totally~ impressed with your awesome boudoir finds.  I bet the bedskirt does appear in a matter of weeks.  And there really is nothing like a great deal to make the week!

Alexandra, you never cease to amaze me with your thrifty bargains! And, I am with you--only cotton. Unless, of course, it's VERA. But I've never found a VERA sheet set with 18-inch-deep pockets set for a queensize bed.   Wink I do have a vintage VERA pillowcase that is a poly-cotton blend, but it's more because I was able to find it than to actually use it.  It's ORANGE, lol, with an op-art design. How could I say no?

Mrs. Goodwill, could you describe that wild sheet set you got for your toddler? I am intrigued!

Unlike the rest of you (blush) I have no set price for my sheets.  I want only cotton at the highest thread count I can afford, even if I have only one set (as I currently do). Of course, I don't have wee ones, or I am sure my needs and costs would be quite different Grin

Someday I would love to have silk. Not polyester satin (ick!) but natural silk. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

SeSo, I think it would be truly fun to go thrifting with you-- you have great enthusiasm, which makes for a more enjoyable day. You and I look for different things, so there'd be no thrifting competition between us. And it would be marvelous to see the kinds of items you seize and identify as hidden gems!  Grin

Ditto for you, TSR!  You're the one  I think of of when I find something Victorian/"Thrifted Victorian Opulent" (I made that up, but you know what I mean!) "Boy howdy," I say to myself, "I wish TSR was here..she would love this (fill in the blank)." Sometimes I think I walk away from great vintage pieces because they are not my style, but I do know they are wonderful!

Any chance of y'all coming to Renniger's with us in January? (If I hit the Lotto before then, I will send you a plane ticket, lol!)

Merci, mon ami! I am touched by your comments.

Ciao, Bella!

Ah, I so wish I could-- But funds even being available, vacation time is regrettably not. My marketing firm is small, so we only get ten days vacay per year, most of which ends up being used up on Thanksgiving, Christmas and the odd and assorted errand day.

I will however absolutely love to hear the stories! That's enjoyable, too!

I don't know why, but sheets (and towels) are in the same category as socks and underwear for me:  gotta be new.  Well, I actually do buy thrifted sheets but only to use the fabric in art projects.  I've seen a lot of thrifted sheets with gross stains, and I guess it turned me off from using thrifted sheets on my bed.

I'm with you, Mattie, thrifted sheets skeeve me out.  Even knowing that they've gone through the wash with bleach and hot water, it's still too much for me.  *shivers*

On the bright side, we enough sheets to last a decade or two as wedding gifts.  We're good on the bedding front for a while!
